The Canon EOS-1D X is a great choice for sports shooters and photojournalists, but is likely an overkill for most shooters.

  • +

Full-frame image sensor. 14fps burst capability. 61-point autofocus system. Excellent images at very high ISO settings. Built like a tank. Loads of controls. Dual CF card slots. 1080p video capture.

  • -

Very expensive. Heavy. No built-in flash. No headphone jack. Uncompressed HDMI video output not possible. Switching between still and video live view mode is cumbersome.

What Canon has achieved with the EOS-1D X is remarkable and we have no hesitation in saying it’s the best Canon DSLR we’ve ever used. The way it produces acceptable results even at ISO 12,800 and 25,600 is extremely impressive.

  • +

Performs exceptionally well in low-light situations, Capable of shooting breathtaking bursts at high speed, Feels robust and up to the task of any photo challenge

  • -

AF drive mode isn’t displayed through the viewfinder when it’s being changed, Star rating isn’t as intuitive as that on the EOS-5D Mark III, No identifiable movie-record button on the body

Our initial report on the Canon EOS-1D X appeared in the Image Tech section of our homepage at www.shutterbug.com and was based on a preproduction model. This is our final report based on a factory-ship model.

And then there was one - one Canon EOS 1-Series DSLR body. The Canon EOS 1D X. The "1" means top-of-the-line , as-good-as-it-gets , #1 , you're-going-to-love-it. The "D" means "Digital".

If you're a 1D Mark IV owner in the market for a new professional DSLR, you probably already know you're buying the X. 1Ds Mark III shooters who spend most of their time in a studio may have less motivation to jump, however, considering the current street value of that camera and the benefits of the...

Shooting is available in Manual, TV, AV, P, Pc1 and Bulb modes and each is accessed with ease by using the mode button found on the top of the camera. Exposure metering has also been improved on the 1D X with a DIGIC 4 processor dedicated solely to metering.

Our testing team has had their hands on the Canon EOS 1DX and put the camera through their rigorous regime of lab and field tests. They’ve posted their full, scientific Canon 1DX review over on our sister site TechRadar . So go there for all your image quality analysis, noise charts and more.

  • +

The Canon EOS-1D X’s AF system is fast and reliable in a wide range of situations, and it captures subjects sharply even in very low light.

  • -

Although the Canon EOS-1DX control layout is designed to enable you to adjust settings quickly whether you are shooting with the camera held horizontally or upright, Canon hasn’t given it some of the useful features found on the EOS 5D Mark III.

Canon has yet again created a truly amazing camera with the EOS-1D X. From the first weekend we got to shoot with it, when we came home with a dozen keepers, up until the last frame we shot for this test, it was simply a pleasure to use.

While Canon may have a job on its hands to persuade EOS-1D Mark IV users that they don’t need the 1.3x crop factor and EOS-1Ds Mark III users that they don’t need 21 million pixels, the Canon EOS 1DX doesn’t fail to impress.

The Canon EOS 1DX is a great successor to both the 1DS Mark 3 and 1D Mark 4, which are already pretty old, and can easily replace them both. The high picture quality from the full frame sensor, coupled with the very fast continuous shooting modes make it a perfect choice for both sports and studio...

I have had my 1dx for a little over a year and I LOVE it! I love it so much that I sold my 5dIII, 6d and 7d and I have just purchased a second 1dx as my backup for my events and portraits to keep zoom on one camera and wide on another.

I wanted this camera since if was introduced to the consumer world. I fought with myself over the price for a long time. I downloaded the manual and read it prior to buying the camera. It takes a lot to get use, sometimes overwhelming. I do 90% action sports photography.

  • +

good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, easy to use

    Heavy/Bulky, Complicated controls/menu

And I am so happy that I did. The menuing is pretty much the same as the Mark III and the features are outstanding. Have only been shooting it for about two and half weeks but am very impressed with the light gathering of the sensor, the speed of the shutter and the AF system which is state of the...

This camera is simply a perfection from previous 1D and 1Ds models. The image quality and AF accuracy are amazing. It performs quite well under low light conditions.

  • +

High ISO Performance, Fast / Accurate Auto-Focus, Weather proof, Good Image Quality

10/10

I purchased the Canon EOS 1D X right at its debut. It has completely redone the works of Canon's Pro Lineup. I have the 1D Mark IV , which was the Top Gun for sports photographers and has out performed the1DS Mark III which was the full frame camera for portrait photographers.

  • +

The Canon 1DX is the Professional Flagship of Canon's EOS DSLR Lineup. It outperforms, in SPEED frames Per second, ISO lighting conditions, Accurately autofocuses quicker, longer battery life, better sealing for weather conditions and more focusing points for moving objects such as in sports and...

  • -

Lost the APH & APC sensor appeal that can bring your camera closer to a subject with a lens. Full Frame is actual, like the 1DX Camera. APH sensor is 1.3 X crop factor, which means multiply lens range by this to get focal length.

10/10

There is a lot to love and very little or nothing to criticize about this camera. I've owned it since it was introduced and cannot think of a single real complaint. Size and weight and price maybe. But there are good reasons for all of those.

  • +

Superlative in all respects. 12 fps (with optional 14fps jpeg mirror up), highly adaptive/customizable AF system that works nearly perfectly, bomb proof construction plus excellent high ISO performance.

  • -

Expensive but you get what you pay for.

The 1DX is Canon's best work in many years. The Mark IIn was a great camera for the technology at the time of its release, but the Mark III had all kinds of problems. The Mark IV, while a brilliant camera at times, was inconsistent in certain harsh conditions.

  • +

Fast / Accurate Auto-Focus, Fast Shutter Speed, Good Image Quality, High ISO Performance, Large Clear LCD

31 July 2012

Well, let's be very clear from the start - this is an expensive camera body. As I have long used a 1Ds M3, and this is 18MP versus my 1Ds offering 21MP one might logically ask if this is an upgrade? Yes, it is. It is dramatically fast to focus, shockingly so.

  • +

speed of accurate focus, build quality, high ISO performance, image rendering

  • -

a touch heavy, a touch expensive, lack of headphone jack
