The Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II Lens delivers very good image quality in a small , light , fast and affordable package. Add in the very popular focal length range and you have a lens that is just right for many digital SLR camera owners.

Designed for APS-C cameras but with a pro-spec build quality, this sub-£500 optic is a good update to an already popular lens

  • +

    Fast aperture

  • -

    Non-internal focusing

Putting aside such glaring issues as build quality, noisy and slow AF, Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II LD ASPH IF is capable of producing pretty good results. Unfortunately, the performance is rather inconsistent across the zoom and aperture ranges.

With the exception of the distortion at the wide end, this is a very competent lens and a considerable jump up from the general standard of kit lens that it would replace. There is little else that lets it down and good resolution across the frame that is acceptable even when the lens is used wide...

  • +

Good resolution and control of CA, Nice build, an improvement for Tamron, Consistent through the focal range

  • -

Distortion at the wide end., No supplied case or pouch.

A hood (petal style) which mounts on the lens using a bayonet fitting is supplied with the lens. The front of the lens is threaded for 72mm diameter filters and the lens cap is a "center squeeze" design which makes it easier to remove and replace with the lens hood mounted.

DSLR photographers looking to move up from the distortion and limited sharpness and speed of their kit lens will welcome this new wide-to-medium tele. Tamron has toted out big-gun technology for its 26-78mm equivalent ($450, street).

Outperforms similarly priced lenses, but quality control could be an issue

The Tamron AF 17-50mm f/2.8 SP XR Di II LD Aspherical [IF] is a very serious performer capable to deliver very sharp images at all focal lengths. Vignetting and distortion are about average for a lens in this class. CAs are a bit on the high side towards the short end of the focal range.

I have been using this for quite sometime shooting landscape. Though I find soft in some instances, I am very satisfied with overall performance of it and would recommend others for everyday use lens.

It's a great lens, tends be be my "go to" for every day and even portrait photography. Clear images, quick focus, if you're looking for a day to day, especially good in low light lens, this is the one.

When I first started searching for a wide angle multipurpose zoom lens, I shortlisted Canon 18-200mm IS, Canon 18-55mm IS, Canon 17-50mm F2.8 USM, Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 & Tamron 17-50mm F2.8. I read various expert reviews, user reviews and lens comparisons on the internet.

  • +

Sharp photos in good light conditions, excellent wide angle outdoor shots

  • -

At f2.8 / 17mm photos are not sharp, difficult to focus in low light conditions

Yesterday, July 31, 2017, I received my Tamron 17-50 f2.8 lens. First, BH Photo delivered it on time and well-packaged. The whole online purchase was smooth and easy to complete. I am a seasoned photographer and in the past did a lot of wedding photography with medium-size Mamiyas as well as 35mm...
