Great unit. Many input connects, easy controls, good remote. You need the r-s700 though if you want an equalizer. I missed that. Not sure why it's not on this unit/model.
Accurate Controls, Easy To Set Up, Good Power Output, Good Remote Control, Great Sound Quality
Equalizer Connect, Limited Functions
hooked up to the TV, use for listening to CD's, records. would have rated it a 5 but it has poor reception on some of my favorite stations and the antenna was cheap and had to purchase a new one.

Poor Reception / Weak Antenna
Great unit. A good tuner for weak signal areas (as long as a decent antenna is used). Plenty of input/output options. Best feature (which Yamaha thankfully retained from earlier models, and which seems to be a exclusively Yamaha) is the continuously variable loudness compensation control.
We use this on a regular basis and couldn't ask for anything better.
This unit was purchased to replace a 20 year old Yamaha receiver in the RX series. I was looking for a good, not cosmic, audio amplifier/receiver and had no need for home theatre support.
Too bad. Yamaha engineers still don't understand the Fletcher-Munson loudness circuit. On this receiver they call it variable loudness control but that control changes the VOLUME too. That's not what you want.
Last summer I upgraded my $110 budget receiver (Sherwood 4208) with the Yamaha R-S500. I also upgraded my speakers to Polk Audio RTI A5 small towers and I added an external USB DAC (HiFiMe Sabre 9018). The Yamaha has a much fuller, detailed sound than the Sherwood.
Sounds awesome. I paired it with JBL Studio 230 speakers and it rocks. Very clear, no fuzz unless I crank it past a normal human listening volume with no signal going through. Dials are a little cheap and the wire connections are not the best but this works really well for my needs and I have no...
Perfect for my use. Great workmanship and performance. Totally satisfied.
Works well, has the analog connections I needed. I do wish it had other, more modern, connection methods - bluetooth, Cat5e, wifi.
