  • -

Some distortion at 70mm. Heavy. Expensive.

Canon's update to its professional fast telezoom may look much the same on the outside, but internally it's been updated to give image quality that's quite simply the best in its class. Effective autofocus and image stabilization systems, plus full weather sealing, round off a compelling package.

  • +

Exceptional image quality, Superb build quality, including dust- and water-sealing, Highly effective image stabilization, Excellent autofocus and manual override

  • -

Relatively harsh rendition of out-of-focus areas of the image, Somewhat susceptible to flare with direct light sources in or close to the frame, Inconvenient design of tripod mount ring (can't be detached without taking lens off camera)

The Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II USM , ( ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ) is Canon’s latest version of this very popular lens. It replaced the previous EF 70-200/2.8L IS USM (Mk I) in early 2010. The Mk II lens adds a 5th UD element, improved Image Stabilization, faster AF and closer focusing.

A year ago Canon unveiled an upgraded version of one of its crown jewels: the 70–200mm f/2.8L IS lens. The original, debuting nearly 10 years ago as one of the first f/2.8 lenses with IS, was fast, plus sharp at the wider focal lengths. It was heavy, though, and at $1,700 (street), expensive.

This one's fairly straightforward: if you were looking, you probably were already thinking about getting this lens, and there's nothing to fault it. If absolutely need image stabilization and the sharpest, best image quality in a 70-200mm zoom, it's money well-spent.

I'm a fledgling photographer and was hesitant to make this investment, but I'm so happy I did. The construction of this lens is beyond reproach. Heavy, of course, but what do you expect when you construct something with durable materials.

The lens is amazing! The difference from the first version is minor, but pronounced. The improved sharpness is throughout the entire range, but most notable wide open. With the first version I seldom felt that f2.8 was sharp, that's not the case with the new lens.

I've read the reviews and wondered if this lens is as good as everyone says it is. It is. It's an amazing piece of equipment and it's almost impossible to take a bad picture with it.

  • +

    Sharp, fast, bokeh, looks great

  • -

None really. Some complain it's a little heavy but I usually carry a Canon 100-400 so this isn't a big deal for me.

I use this lens as a supplement to my bigger lenses (400mm and 500mm), mostly for wildlife photography. The lens is super sharp. While a bit on the heavy side, it is easily hand holdable.

This is an expensive lens however you could consider offsetting the cost by not needing/selling any prime lens within the given range. This lens performs as good as or very close to the primes.

It was time to move up from my 70-200 F4L and the older f2.8 version's were not an option due to their week performance at f2.8 so I bit the bullet. So far this lens almost stays permanently on my 5D MKII and it has earned it's money back several times over.

  • +

Very very sharp, Too sharp actually at times., weather sealing,, nice new locking hood design,, Improved IS over older versions, can really hand hold to 3 real stops under., 3D like rendering of subjects in circle of confusion ( Almost Pentax limited lens like ), great colour rendering and contrast,...

  • -

PRICE!, I don't know of Pentax patented it but a hood window to adjust polarizing filters or similar would be nice,, Strange bokeh, it's a bit harsh with back ground high lights and can make some hard yet still round halos.
