Lenovo was one of the pioneers of the convertible market long ago, but the X1 Tablet ($1,549 as reviewed) marks the company’s first foray into the Microsoft Surface-style designs with their flagship ThinkPad line of products.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 tablet isn't as slick as some other Windows tablets, but its modular add-ons give it a cool built-to-order feel.

  • +

Lenovo's ThinkPad X1 Tablet offers modular add-on options, and has a sharp display and a great keyboard.

  • -

The Intel Core m3 base model is not the fastest machine around, and adding faster parts and optional modules can get expensive. There's no slot or magnetic anchor for the optional stylus.

Lenovo's 12-inch ThinkPad X1 Tablet is a compact and robust modular 2-in-1 hybrid that's a serious challenger to Microsoft's Atom x7-based Surface 3 . It's not cheap though, and while the tablet, keyboard and stylus are all shipped as standard, the optional Productivity Module will probably be...

  • +

Compact, light and portable, Keyboard, tablet and stylus all included, Efficient kickstand, Solid magnetic connection between tablet and keyboard, Add-on modules extend functionality

Still, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 isn’t a bad machine. If you’re looking for something that covers the middle ground between productivity and pleasure then the X1 may be the perfect two-in-one to fill that gap.

  • +

Great flip stand design, Durable build quality, Bright, vibrant IPS display, Excellent Keyboard

  • -

Short battery life, Expensive, Performance is mediocre for price

We first encountered the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Tablet at the CES technology show in Las Vegas earlier this year, and at that time aping the Surface Pro 4’s flappy keyboard and kickstand seemed the thing to do.

For the ThinkPad diehards out there, you've just met the best business-bent tablet that money can buy. For everyone else, Apple or Microsoft's pro tablets can handle about the same tasks for less altogether.

  • +

Versatile modules, Extendable battery life, Excellent keyboard cover

  • -

    Middling battery life, Poor 'lapability'

Lenovo’s upgradeable modular Windows tablet is less a vision of the future and more a collection of mistakes to avoid

  • +

Good quality screen; Fast and accurate fingerprint reader

  • -

Poorly designed modules and docking mechanism; Disappointing build quality; Short battery life; Awkward, fiddly when used on lap; Iffy touchpad

I love that machine very much. I use it in the office and on meetings, presentations. Quick enough for my needs and very lightweighted one. Battery life is OK for me but I'm not a digital nomad. 4-6 hours with my usage is the average without the additional battery pack.

It's a nice, lightweight and handy computer. It is very nice to be able to use both tablet and laptop form. I have to state that the keyboard is perfect.

Currently use this as my work laptop. Haven't had any issues with it compared to other users. Trackpad works fine, battery life is sufficient, and love the flexibility of this laptop.

Coming from surface pro 4 i7, this is a true laptop replacement, with Wacom pen support(much better than the N-Trig pen on surface pro 4). Easy to hold as a tablet, great battery life with productivity module. It also comes with a thinkpad keyboard that way better than the surface pro 4 keyboard.

I've had this about two weeks now and it's been great!! Linux works for the most part out of the box and keyboard, trackpoint, etc all just work. Very light and a great screen. I've had no issues. Only gripe is the battery on the m7 model is only about 5ish hours. I'd buy again in a heartbeat.

When I received the machine, fell in love with it right away: slick design, the pen, its flawless performance. Right after the 2nd week, the monitor would display a sad face with a message "display driver mailfunction".

Its an awful system with extremely unstable operations. Suddenly, the windows crashed within 2 months of buying it. I can't find any way to recover it. I tried resetting it but it takes days & keeps working.
