The Surface Pro 4 is the best version of Microsoft's tablet yet, with a stellar display, snappy performance, and more than 10 hours of battery life. With Windows 10, the Surface Pen, and optional Type Cover, it can replace your laptop.

  • +

Sharp, vibrant touch display. Full-friction, adjustable kickstand. Improved Surface Pen and Type Cover from the previous iteration. Strong battery life in testing.

  • -

Pricey. Type Cover sold separately. Still only one USB port.

Same face, faster hardware. Is the highest-end Surface Pro 4 really worth the investment? We give you the raw benchmarks for you to decide on your own.

  • +

no major throttling issues, stronger GPU performance, calibrated display, faster SSD performance

  • -

only a slight increase in CPU performance over Core i5, shorter battery life, active cooling system, minor backlight bleeding

But with a much-improved pen, a more pixel-dense screen, a springier keyboard, and over 10 hours of battery life, combined with the already excellent design elements that Microsoft debuted in previous iterations, the Surface Pro 4 is an excellently refined high-end computing device.

  • +

Better screen, keyboard, and pen than Surface Pro 3, Bona fide 10-hour battery life, Better cooling means less-frequent fan noise

  • -

Type Cover still costs extra, Other convertibles still make for better laptops

The Surface Pro 4 is a microcosm of the change Microsoft is trying to spur inside its own walls. Time and time again, it missed the opportunity to leap on a new trend in consumer technology. But not with Surface. This time, Microsoft is a leader. It’s setting the trend.

A host of small refinements cements the Surface Pro 4's position as the best-in-class Windows tablet -- so long as you're prepared to pay extra for the required keyboard cover accessory.

  • +

The Surface Pro 4 fits a larger screen with a higher resolution into a slightly slimmer body than last year's model. The pen and keyboard cover are also improved, and this is one of the first mobile systems shipping with Intel's latest processors.

  • -

Microsoft still refuses to include the Type Cover keyboard by default, forcing a separate purchase. Battery life still isn't enough for a full day.

I want to give the Surface Pro 4 a higher score. The PixelSense display is superb bit of engineering, and the new 6th Gen Intel chip delivers the kind of swift performance I'm looking for, but the 6-hour battery life holds the SP4 back from glory.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 4 arrives three years to the day after the launch of the original Surface. Grinding through four major models in three years isn’t exactly something to crow about, but give Redmond points for tenacity. Has it finally gotten the Windows tablet right?

  • +

Dazzling screen and powerful audio make this an impressive platform for video content. Plenty of power packed into a sub-two pound chassis.

  • -

Some performance and utility hiccups. Floppy keyboard remains underwhelming.

For three years, Microsoft has been trying to convince us that a tablet can replace our laptops. Throughout three major design iterations, that’s been the driving message behind the Surface. Last...

Fast performance, Lightweight and portable design, Improved typing experience

Awkward on a lap, Pricey, Windows 10 is still buggy

The Surface Pro 4 builds on the best parts of the Surface Pro 3, and it finally delivers a solid typing experience with the revamped Type Cover (which is unfortunately sold separately).

  • +

Works well as both a tablet and a laptop, New Type Cover and Surface Pen are massive improvements, Still pretty thin and light for the equivalent of an ultraportable

  • -

Mediocre battery life, Type Cover is an additional $130

It’s taken four tries, but the Surface Pro 4 is now undeniably the 2-in-1 to beat.

It's a mixed bag. It's modern and slick in many regards, but it also has a lot of shortcomings. See points below.+ Looks really modern and slick.+ Pen works great & the drawing programs are really nice.

-DOES NOT COME WITH THE KEYBOARD COVER! Does, however, come with the surface pen. -The micro SD slot is hard to find. It's tucked away underneath the kickstand on the right side, about an inch lower than the power port.

  • +

-Extremely fast startup -Runs fast. -Light -Long battery life, especially on low brightness and with power-saving mode on. -Completely silent unless it gets super-hot and actually has to turn on the fans, at which point it is still fairly quiet.

  • -

-Gets pretty warm under heavy stress, but it still doesn't take a hit to it's performance. -When connecting to my TV, I have to make sure I restart the tablet first or one of two things happens: either the touchscreen stops working, or it won't recognize the TV as a sound playback device.

I had the SP3 and now have a 4. I love this device. I also have an iPad Pro. Windows 10 makes the IOS look old fashioned. I can add memory, peripherals, go from Docked wired Network to wireless seamlessly. Everything works as advertised. Try it, you won't regret it.

I received a Surface Pro 4 as a gift sometime ago a few month's back and was completely taken aback by the sheer beauty of the device. It's not only light but it handles just like a regular laptop, if not better. The ability to use it as a tablet but with full power was just what I needed.

I bought this as a replacement for a Surface 3 that lacked enough memory, which replaced a Surface 1 RT.I run Photoshop and InDesign with no issues, battery is great, it is light and portable, I tether it to my camera also. Easy to carry in the field.

I use it for drawing comics and so far so good it delivers. No lock ups/ freeze ups. There's a little learning curve but ones over the it's slick as a whistle. Only negative is battery life could be improved. All in all though I would give it two thumbs up. ...

I was looking for a laptop replacement for my 6 year old Lenovo Thinkpad. I also wanted to portability and form factor of a tablet, The Surface Pro 4 is a perfect solution. I highly recommend it. I use it mainly for office applications and corp email - it performs perfectly.

It's good for what it does but other tablets for cheaper can do basically the same thing. Don't regret my purchase as I use it for some enterprise software but basic software there are alternatives for much cheaper.
