Nikon has produced more than half a dozen high-speed, tele zooms since the early 1980s. The first with Vibration Reduction— the full-frame 70–200mm f/2.8 VR of 2003—was an instant classic, lauded for its high-speed autofocus, VR, and attractive styling.

There's little doubt that the lens represents some of the best optical engineering to date, and that the purchase of the lens represents an investment that's not likely to lose its value.

The Nikon AF-S 70-200 VR II is a very good zoom lens that delivers excellent sharpness wide open already, at least in the image center. Vignetting and distortion are no issues on DX cameras. CAs are very low at 70mm and moderate at longer focal lengths.

The Nikon AF-S 70-200 VR II is a very good zoom lens that delivers excellent sharpness wide open already, at least in the image center. Vignetting is very well controlled and CAs as well as distortion are typical for a lens in this class.

The previous version of the Nikkor 70-200 mm f/2.8 VR was praised by us. It would be difficult not to praise the new version, especially that in practically every category it gets better results than its predecessor.

  • +

high build quality,, splendid image quality in the frame centre,, very good image quality at the frame edge,, low chromatic aberration,, slight distortion,, well-corrected coma,, low astigmatism,, relatively well-corrected vignetting,, fast, silent and accurate autofocus,, efficient image...

  • -

edge of full frame is a bit too soft at the maximum relative aperture.

I am an old photographer who has used every camera lens combination since the sixties. I have worked as a photographic technician, printer and film processor for Labs the Pros used before Digital.

It's heavy and fast. Auto focus is quiet, fast and sharp. The build quality is very good. This is an upgrade from the 70-200mm VR1. Bought the lens with the recent price decrease. I took a picture at a car race and it was night time with outdoor lighting. The VR worked good.

I totally love this lens. I have it since 2010 and until now works like a charm. Even though it's a bit heavy and with a Nikon d3s is 3kg I am always amazed by it. I use it mostly at the getting ready photos, church and at the photo sessions.

  • +

Sharp, very durable, super fast focus

  • -

    Heavy

I can't rate it as excellent due to the focal breathing. Nor can I rate it average. So 4 stars is a compromise. Sorry, Nikon.

  • +

    Stunning IQ, beautifully built

  • -

Awful focus breathing that will matter a good deal to some shooters

  • -

    expensive, Heavy but worth it

This lens allowed me to significant reduce the collection of lenses I had. The use of VR and ridiculous shutter speed has allowed me to take photos od indoor sports in a way that I have never been able to before.

I just upgraded from the nikon 28-300mm and this lens blows it out of the water. The images are much sharper and and the depth of field of the 2.8f is stunning. Looking forward to putting some time in behind it.
