The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II is the go-to lens for many an event photographer, and it's a good one.

  • +

Sharp throughout zoom range. Doesn't extend when zooming. Focus limiter switch. In-lens vibration reduction. Includes tripod collar.

  • -

Some pincushion distortion. Close focus limited to 4.6 feet.

Thanks to a recent price-drop Nikon’s new lens can almost be considered a bargain at the moment, albeit an expensive bargain. Though there is very little to dislike, if I were buying this lens I would get the tripod-mounting pillar modified to improve the way that the zoom sits in my hand.

  • +

    Consistent high resolution

  • -

    Fiddly M/AF switch

Nikon’s entry into past universal 80-200mm f/2.8 lenses started back in 1978 with a manual focus, push-pull lens checking in at 4 lbs. Ten years later the autofocus model arrived sporting ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass; ’92 marked the “D” package.

Nikon has produced more than half a dozen high-speed, tele zooms since the early 1980s. The first with Vibration Reduction— the full-frame 70–200mm f/2.8 VR of 2003—was an instant classic, lauded for its high-speed autofocus, VR, and attractive styling.

Everything about this lens is amazing. The SHARPNESS! Silky smooth backgrounds. Build Quality. Those complaining about the weight or size need to buy a point & shoot. This thing is the right tool for MANY jobs!

Matched up with my D810. Wanted a quality versatile lense to match up with a quality camera. This was the ticket. Lense is heavy but manageable.

There is an interesting cut shape in the back of the lens in a black cushy material near the mount. This part essentially goes into the body when attached to the camera. It looked like a symmetrical hexagon with nice rounded edges.

  • +

Saved a lot of money without any compromise on image quality. The lens is practically new condition except that it came in a white box with limited warranty. This is probably the millionth review that the lens is amazing and has no par in IQ.

  • -

    Pricey, but worth every penney.

Love love the lens. I have tested it on my D700 and D7000. It is so sharp and smooth. I regret that I have waited for this long to get it. It is sure heavy. I am thinking of getting a monopod to go with it.

  • +

Easy To Use, Fast / Accurate Auto-Focus, Good Image Quality, Good Image Stabilization, Sharp

Absolutely loving this lens.. The sharpness, the constrast, the speed, you should get one to feel it. Was in a confused state whether to buy this or not, but did buy it and now there is no regret. Also, was lucky enough to buy this during the $300 rebate.

Hello all, wether you're wealthy and just scanning over a couple of quick reviews or obsessing over this lens like I did, you obviously want to know about this lens. I know that before I bought it I was constantly trying to justify the price as an aspiring photographer at the age of 15 who was lucky...

I can't rate it as excellent due to the focal breathing. Nor can I rate it average. So 4 stars is a compromise. Sorry, Nikon.

  • +

    Stunning IQ, beautifully built

  • -

Awful focus breathing that will matter a good deal to some shooters

This lens allowed me to significant reduce the collection of lenses I had. The use of VR and ridiculous shutter speed has allowed me to take photos od indoor sports in a way that I have never been able to before.
