I prefer the Nikon SB-400 . It's shorter, more powerful, takes normal AA cells, and costs less. I see no reason to buy an SB-300, unless you really need it to bend over backwards.
With the weakest power output in this round-up, the SB-300 is one of two entry-level flashguns from Nikon (the other being the SB-400). Offering just a few improvements over the standard in-built flash, it’s designed for those looking for a minor performance upgrade only.
This lovely little bounce flash is much much powerful and effective than I expected. The SB-300 is an excellent complement to my D5500. I got amazing results with it, this is why Nikon has an excellent reputation for the reliability of their Speedlight units.
The flash is definitey significantly brighter than the standard flash and has significantly improved indoor photos. I wish I had bought one awhile ago. It's tiny compared to some of the other Nikon flashes, so although it's more limited, it is very easy to carry around.

Bright, easy to attach, use, transport, only two AAA batteries required

Limited functionality, doesn't swivel left/right, no LED light for video like SB500
Bought as a mini travel flash and the battery door snapped and fell off during first use.
I wanted a small flash to use on a Nikon Df, which does not have a built-in pop-up flash. I have a larger SB600 which works well, but is a bit larger for casual candid shooting. My only con at this point is trying to figure out Balanced Fill operation with the SB300.
I highly recommend this flash for anyone who uses a Nikon D3200 camera.

This flash attaches quickly. It is the ideal flash to use in low-light situations when the camera's built-in flash is just not powerful enough.
I took picture inside a gym and they came out great with the flash.
I bought this speed light strictly for family/friend snapshots, like dinner a few nights ago, where it was intended to just be a fill flash for shots where the subjects were being shot at sunset from fairly close range. Less than 10 feet. The flash is generally inadequate for the purpose.
This is a fabulous small flash that meets my needs for lighting a close up subject.
Wanted something simple for my d50 and this fits the bill.
A real nice little flash; it take the place of the pop up and has more power. Great for fill or when needed in a darkened room. Very small, fits in a shirt pocket and is easy to use on/off that's it.
