Although 8 months has now passed since we reviewed the Samsung SSD 850 Evo series, not a lot has changed in the SSD industry. With SATA SSDs running out of bandwidth long before the 850 series, there has been little to no room for improvement with the biggest improvements being made to pricing.
The first SSD I used day to day in my main PC was the Intel X25-M and despite being an eye-watering $4.87 per gigabyte, the 80GB model was a bargain at $390 considering the SLC X25-E was selling for almost twice that in a miniscule 64GB capacity.

Highest capacity consumer SSD available, performance is consistent with and often a tad faster than the 500GB 850 Evo, pricing is fair.
-
-
Fair doesn't mean inexpensive and if you're on a budget, two of Samsung's 1TB SSDs are a tad cheaper than one of the 2TB models.
Performance Summary : The new Samsung SSD 850 EVO 500GB drive we tested performed extremely well throughout our battery of tests. The drive performed well with large sequential transfers and also offered very low access times.
We normally recommend that you buy at least 250GB SSD because it often delivers good performance without the performance penalties come from smaller capacity drives due to lack of parallelism. Also, 250GB is a sweet spot for OS and a few commonly used apps.
The Samsung 850 Evo has the best combination of performance, cost and capacity, making it the ideal drive for any home user.

The Samsung SSD 850 Evo delivers great performance with useful features, at an affordable price. The drive is available with up to 2TB of storage space.

The drive carries a 5-year warranty instead of the 10 years the Pro model offers. The Samsung Magician software only works with Windows.
Faster, significantly increased longevity and at the same time lower production costs. These three seemingly contradicting aspects are what Samsung are said to have succeeded with 3D V-NAND.

TurboWrite cache accelerates esp. smaller models, Supports Microsoft eDrive (encryption), Very good everyday performance, Five-year warranty

Loss of performance under extreme load
There are only a few names in the industry that build exceptional SSDs that are affordable and very reliable these days, Toshiba, Plextor, OCZ, Micron, the latest Corsair SSDs and then there is Samsung.
TRIM Performance: While SSDs offer many benefits, there are some downsides to using flash memory. One of the biggest issues people run into is performance degradation. Over time, an SSD will run out of fresh blocks and will have to write over data the file system has marked as deleted.

Equipped with 3-bit 3D V-NAND, Available in 120GB, 250GB, 500GB and 1TB capacities, Features RAPID mode and TurboWrite technology, Excellent sequential read and write speeds under most conditions, Good random read performance, Performs equally well with compressible and incompressible data, Good...

Mediocre random write performance, RAPID mode is Windows only
After we reviewed the 850 Pro 512GB model and heard that Samsung would also send us the 850 EVO 500GB we thought that there would be a sufficient performance gap between those two to "justify" both the different target areas and the difference in price.

Throughout testing, the 1TB Samsung 850 EVO has proven to be quite the performer. Utilizing the same controller as the 850 Pro and 840 EVO, we were able to see great speeds in our synthetic tests. Reads and writes both pushing past 500MB/s.
This product stopped working on me less than a year after purchase. The warranty is five years but reaching a Samsung representative for help, or finding a service request on their website, or even registering this very product on their website is IMPOSSIBLE.
Once you get over the sticker shock, you'll find yourself wondering why you didn't get this drive sooner. I've been using it with a build I put together last year. In the year+ I've been using it, it's been exceptional.

I bought this Samsung 850 EVO 250GB 2.5" SATA III Internal Solid State Drive to add to my existing Intel SSDSA2CW 160G3ATA which stores all my programs including Windows, and is running out of space.

Difficult To Use
For a first time SSD user, I must say its lightning fast compared to traditional hard drives. The software installed with no problems and transferred all my data to my new drive with ease. (You'll need a special cord if you plan on just transferring all the data from your old HDD to the SSD).
I am glad i purchased this to upgrade my ASUS core i7 laptop. it was a breeze to transfer with the included software and had it back running quicker than ever. You do need a USB to SATA cable to transfer your data. My laptop is now super fast and speeds went from in the low 80's to 10s of thousands!
I am using Samsung 850 Evo 250G x 2 for Raid 0 array function. combine stripping of 500G of super Fast SSD disk space. of cos rebootable and speed bit my 256G PCIE Standalone SSD.
Great, fast SSD and apart from one issue easy to install. Beware that this does not come with a USB/SATA cable and that putting it in some enclosures for the cloning step will not work.
I love these fast SSD drives! I have purchased and installed five of them and each has worked flawlessly. They all have increased performance speeds dramatically, even in older systems. Included is very good drive data migration software that is easily used.
Good product! Remember to get USB (from computer) to SATA (SSD) cable, doesn't come with it!
