Very few headphones deserve to be called a true "reference" but the HD650s are in very selected company of chosen masterpieces.

The formidable Sennheiser HD 650 headphones are fit for a king--and have a price tag to prove it.

  • +

Sennheiser's flagship headphones have high-tech styling, extraordinary bass response, and an extremely comfortable design.

  • -

They're heavy and very pricey, not to mention ill suited for use with the iPod.

The Sennheiser HD 650 headphones have everything you want in full-size audiophile headphones.

  • +

Warm, natural, detailed sound. Very comfortable. Sturdy construction. Replaceable cables.

  • -

    Expensive.

By default, I've become "the headphone guy" in high-end audio. I don't quite understand why other audiophiles don't fess up that they listen to 'phones too. Maybe it's a macho thing, like the Butt Blaster at the gym -- you never actually see guys using it, but you do see them furtively exiting the...

The Sennheiser HD650 headphone has seen an enduring popularity among audiophiles for it’s high price-to-performance ratio. But for $499, how much sound is this open-back headphone packing? And is it the right headphone for you?

INTRODUCTION I have had a hankering to see if I can find a better pair of headphones. Primarily, to use as a reference to evaluate source components and pre-amps, and also for personal use. I had purchased a Sennheiser HD497 several years ago, for about $50 USD and it has served me well so far.

I must confess that I can't understand why these headphones are such a big success among audiophiles. Sennheiser's marketing efforts and excellent reputation alone can't be enough to do the trick.

  • +

Nice looks, Sturdy construction, Fat low-end — typical Sennheiser, Not tiring, Rugged, Cable available as a spare part, Five-star comfort, Soft sound (even silky), Not very detailed

  • -

No accessories, Ear cup cushions not replaceable, Where are the high frequencies?, Heavy — you'll always know when you have them on, Bad value for money, Lack of details in the high-frequency range, Unbalanced frequency spectrum, Non-replaceable ear-cup cushions, Value for money, Lack of air, Cruel...

I got my Sennheiser HD650s and immediately opened them and hooked them up to my FiiO X3 player and was wowed by the sound. I have never owned a serious set of headphones, and the sound (from classical music) I heard was a revelation: in 3D, with the instrument positions clearly audible and many,...

These are not cheap headphones. They are reasonably expensive but you will more than get what you pay for.

  • +

Amazing sound, all day comfort, value for money, cord length

  • -

Makes your other headphones sound bad, need an amp to get the most out of them

I have used a variety of Sennheiser products over the years, always impressed with their combination of form and function. These are the most comfortable headphones I have ever used, very good if you spend long hours "in the cans".

These headphones live up to the hype. As studio reference and mixing headphones, they're great. I quickly found many flaws in my mixes. However, they look and feel cheap. I know that they're designed to be light, but I'm afraid that I'm going to bend the metal and / or break the plastic.

Jus got the hd650's about 2 weeks ago...I've broken them in, and let me tell you, they are the closest thing to being at the recording studio with the band!! I mean, they sound so real, and authentic, that its unbelievable!! i mean, what can I say?

These headphones have a pretty good reputation among audiophiles so I figured that I would give it a try. The first thing I noticed is these are some huge headphones . I mean, I guess it’s expected since the audio drivers are high-end, but damn.

The HD 650's are the bang for the buck headphones running through a Schitt Bifrost multibit dac and Asgard 2 preamp. The 650's are detailed and clear. I also own Audeze's and B&O's. The 650's are my choice for clarity, comfort. and price. At $315 these headphones are a steal.
