Clearly this is a lens of contradictions: it has a poor manual-focusing facility but it has a brisk and reliable AF system that records bitingly sharp images. It is also very well priced, which is an added bonus.

With the announcement of Sigma 30mm f/2.8 EX DN, along with its sister Sigma 19mm f/2.8 EX DN, Sigma Corporation has finally made its long anticipated entrance into the mirrorless lens market official.

Sigma 30mm Micro Four Thirds Lens This 30mm lens is currently available to fit both Micro Four Thirds and Sony NEX cameras and costs around £170. It sports a bright f/2.8 aperture and a newly developed linear focus motor.

The Sigma 30mm f/2.8 EX DN is the closest thing to a “fast 50” that we can get right now for Sony’s NEX models in the native E-mount. I’ve been playing with it for a couple of days and, in short, I think it’s a nice complement to the 18-55mm kit lens.

You have to hand it to Sigma, they recognize the opportunity in creating lenses for multiple brands, and have found yet another niche to supply lens alternatives in the micro four-thirds and NEX camps.

The Sigma AF 30mm f/2.8 EX DN is a cute little fellow but not only that - it's good quality stuff, too. This is especially true for the center performance which is nothing short of breathtaking in the relevant aperture range.

During testing this lens proved itself capable of producing excellent results, even at maximum aperture. The light weight, fast autofocus and excellent build should win this lens many fans, especially with the price being so competitive.

Excellent sharpness from maximum aperture, Compact size, Lightweight, Decent build quality, Quick autofocus

This lens is designed for use on mirrorless system cameras and currently comes in mounts for Olympus/Panasonic micro four thirds cameras and for Sony NEX cameras. The film-equivalent angle of view on the Olympus/Panasonic is 60mm and on the Sony 45mm.

Sometimes you face such a situation: a tested instrument has good or very good results in most of categories but the overall impression, a particular slip-up or too high price make me lose all the interest. The Sigma’s 30 mm f/2.8 EX DN case it is a bit reversed.

  • +

compact and quite solid casing,, excellent image quality in the frame centre,, decent image quality on the edge of the Micro 4/3 sensor,, low distortion,, well-corrected coma,, moderate vignetting,, silent, fast and accurate autofocus,, good price/quality ratio.

  • -

a bit too high astigmatism,, noticeable chromatic aberration,, work against bright light should have been better.

I've read most all the reviews on this lens once attached to a Sony A6000, the camera I own, and I'd like to add my findings and take it one more step.First the overall build quality is great, which you've all heard and I find it true. It's elegant, high end looking and cleanly styled.

I like this as a 'normal' lens. It is so good and so inexpensive that I leave it on my NEX when young relatives want to use the camera, too. I got it on a two-for-$200 deal because Sigma has 'replaced' it with a metal-side lens.

  • +

Nearly a pancake. Small, sharp, contrasty and light. Now it is inexpensive, too.

  • -

No MF button or depth scale.

Bought this with an a6000 instead of the kit lens. Glad I did. Great image quality. When the camera is not powered up there is an odd noise that goes away when pwered up. Was concerned at first but then later read this is part of the focusing system and is normal.
