Sony's back with a winner! The MDR-Z7 looks, feels, and sounds like a high-end headphone. The Sony PHA-3 has undeniable synergy with the MDR-Z7, but sounds terrific with other headphones.

Yummy sound, nice bass, clear top end, Impeccable Japanese build quality, Huge soundstage for a closed-back design, Handles ultra-high-res 384kHz/32bit files, Does DSD at 2.8MHz and 5.6MHz, Single-ended and balanced headphone outputs

Doesn’t fold for compact storage, No indicator for remaining battery charge
While expensive, the well-built and supercomfortable Sony MDR-Z7 can go toe to toe with competing high-end audiophile headphones.

The Sony MDR-Z7 is a well-crafted, very comfortable audiophile-grade headphone that features well-balanced, articulate sound. For a closed-back headphone, the soundstage is wide (it sounds more like an open-back headphone).

Expensive; no protective carrying case or pouch.
The Sony MDR-Z7’s are not perfect. The midrange was sometimes a bit recessed and the bass was not the tightest or most extended that I have experienced. They were also a bit warm sounding compared to other audiophile headphones I have heard.
The Sony MDR-Z7's are fantastic. However, at over $500 they aren't for the casual listener. Any over -the-ear CAN will make your music appear to sound better because the sound is more immediate versus a loudspeaker.

Well Built. Very comfortable. Great sound stage. Two cables: Standard single line input and a second balanced line input with separate left & right connections. Makes well mastered recordings and Hi-Res material sound great and average recordings sound better. Coolness is subjective, so 5 Stars.

Really not a "Con" but as they are very revealing poorly mastered material may sound worse than with average CAN's so be forewarned. Expensive but no more than any other set of CANs in the same category.
