The original Pulse launched in 1996 and at that time (along with the original Novation Bass Station) it stood out for being a new analogue synth in a staunchly digital synth market.
Stefan : I started working as a programmer at Waldorf in 1991, so excited at the opportunity of creating synthesizers that I didn't hesitate to quit my tedious computer science studies.
The undeniably analog sound, The very wide sound possibilities, The easy and intuitive handling, The manufacturing quality, The three oscillators, The unison and paraphonic modes, The interactions between oscillators, The different modulations for DCO3, The resonant multi-mode filter, The feedback...
The limiting of parameters to 128 values, The limited direct controls, The LFOs are a bit simple
The original Pulse was rightfully revered for its raw power, but the Pulse 2 sounds better in every department. It's sweeter one moment, infinitely nastier the next and with its extensive programmability, paraphony and funky arpeggiator, is as versatile as it is portable.
Heaps of variety and analogue attitude from an unfeasibly small metal box., Play up to eight-note chords via its 'paraphonic' modes., Large on-board patch pool., CV/Gate outputs.
Display woefully under-used., Destination patch not shown during save process., Matrix method of programming not as much fun as a panel full of knobs.
well, i have owned a BLOFELD and loved the sound HATED THE BUGS. returned it. a year later and i just took delivery on the PULSE 2. for such a small desktop unit it feels like they added a BRICK to it. solid. THE SOUND IS HARD TO BEAT. it punches through even the heaviest guitars.
This little synth is an absolute beast! Perfect for cutting leads and deep and dirty basses... complements the Blofeld perfectly!
Yes, I still have my original Pulse+ analog synth, which actually pairs-up nicely with this beast! The original Pulse+ (only the Plus model) has various cv in/outs, which means with the Pulse 2's cv outs, I can drive *both* at the same time for 6 oscillator goodness!
I was skeptical after watching some demos on YouTube and decided to purchase this little beast. I was very impressed with the preset sounds that came with it. BAM! In your face.
As an owner of the original pulse and several other vintage and modern analogs, this little guy sounds perfect to my ears. Ferocious and mean to pretty and dare I say elegant? Some may say its nothing like the original pulse-doesn't have the character, the weight, etc.
