The ATH-E40 comes in a small, pudgy box, lacking the opulent appearance of the higher-end IM-series. But underneath that unimpressive facade, just what kind of earphone are we dealing with?
However, the design remains an Achilles heel and will be the key bottleneck towards purchase consideration.

- beautifully balanced sound, - excellent sound separation, - great imaging, - neutral tonality... Ideal reference monitor, - good & clear bass... Just enough but not overwhelming, - very wide Soundstage...
-
-
- TOO BIG & very unconfortable, - Proprietary A2DC cable, - Soundstage depth is quite low compared to the width, - comes with not so good eartips, Not for bassheads, not the most comfortable IEMs in the world, it will break your heart when it stops working.
The audio quality is great, but the reinforced section of the cable that you bend around your ear broke after 6 months of use and the left earbud no longer stays in place. A bit disappointing considering the price.

Falls Off/Out Of Ear, Flimsy Construction, Poor Value
I play keyboards and I needed in-ear monitor, whether it's wireless or wired. Since I don't move on stage too much, I decided to use the wired option and needed good in-ear buds. I found them! Fit well -- can be adjusted to fit perfectly due to their design. Hi-fi sound too!
As a bass player, Ath E40 gives an incredible sound,easy-to-use and really affordable for that level of quality. You guys should try this one!
I am a drummer in a band and wear these at least 3 time a week. I have never had any issues with them at all. Good bass without losing the vocals from the mix. I use the Comply T-500 tips.

Comfortable, Durable, Good Bass, Good Value, Great Sound
It's definitely a decent earphone with a reasonable price. It works very good for pop and rock music. I will reccommand this product to my friend.
These in-ear headphones were my first from Audio-Technica's lineup. The sound quality on these headphones are superb and can definitely handle bass with quality and clarity. Out of the box these headphones do not provide a passive bass boost but that should not deter any user from purchasing these...

I've listened to 1more triples , Shure se 215, Bose sound ultra, rha ma 750..Most imp- sound - overall - pretty much neutral , warm sound signature. Very dynamic sound.I enjoy the bass (little north of neutral) , not for bassheads , very tight and textured.. just beautiful..Love the mids too..
