The Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM is the sharp, compact, and inexpensive lens that every Canon shooter should own.

Quite sharp. Very compact. Classic wide-angle field of view. Silent STM focus motor. Affordable.

Lacks image stabilization. Disappointing manual focus experience. Noticeable vignette at f/2.8.
Canon likes to promote the incredible number of lenses they have produced. This production figure far exceeds 100 million as I create the Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM Lens review. Providing lenses like this one in their lineup will, very significantly, increase Canon's production figures and marketing...
There's not a lot to add that the above paragraphs don't spell out in glowing detail -- it's small, it's economical, and it has great test results. I see it ending up in a lot of presents this holiday season.
This compact wide-angle pancake lens for Canon APS-C format digital SLRs features Canon's latest stepping focusing motor technology, which promises, smoother, quieter autofocus performance, which is especially suited to recording video. The lens is super-cheap as well being priced at around £170.
Small and affordable, the Canon 24mm f/2.8 isn't a stellar lens, but it does its job well.
What can be said...this Canon lens is really a good piece of work. For a ‘pancake’ type of device its performance is simply sensational and you get it all for a sensible amount of money. We regret only one thing: the fact that the lens is not as fast as f/2.0.

sensational image quality in the frame centre,, decent image quality on the edge of the frame,, lack of problems with the longitudinal and lateral chromatic aberration,, moderate distortion,, slight astigmatism,, very good coma correction,, proper work against bright light,, small dimensions and...

too high vignetting,, a bit fickle autofocus.
When we look at all the new photographic equipment that appears each year, it’s easy to get swept along by the big announcements such as super-high resolution cameras and ultra-fast lenses.
Perfect for street and travel photography, the 24mm f/2.8 offers great image quality in an extremely portable package. While there are cheaper prime lenses available, Canon’s new pancake is a reasonably priced choice for those looking to keep their kit bag as lightweight as possible, while achieving...
Those looking for a compact companion for their EF-S camera body need look no further. The 38mm equivalent field of view this lens provides is only a little wider than a standard lens, which will make it suited for a wide range of subjects.

No hood included as standard
We think that pancake lenses are slightly odd approach for minimizing the size of DSLR setup - if you want really small gear, mirrorless cameras are the way to go. That being said, many users seem to disagree here and we can't really argue against the obvious success of the Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM...
This is a great lens to walk around with on my 80D. I love how much lighter my camera is without a bulky zoom lens attached. The wide field of view is great (essentially the same as the 40mm pancake on a 5D).
When you think it can't get better with Canon, it surely can now! For this price and size there is no contest in the entire market. I dare say. Even the 1/3 macro is very handy and works great with on top flashes like the nissin i40.

To bad it is APS-C only. But that is nitpicking for this price.
I absolutely LOVE my 24mm STM. It is the perfect lens to take backpacking, as it is light and takes up very little space. I pair it with my SL1, and it makes for a point and shoot sized DSLR package. I have also used it for Street Photography, and it got me my first Explore on Flickr!
Great small lens. Work really well with my SL1. Easy to carry and works really well for all uses. Takes sharp pictures, day and night, the speed eliminates the need to use a flash. The size and light weight make it easy to carry - great for street photography. Highly recommend!
