The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM is a telezoom lens with a compact design and incredibly sharp optics.

Incredibly sharp throughout zoom range. Optically stabilized. Quick focus. 1:3 magnification. Relatively compact.

Pricey. Some barrel distortion at 100mm.
It will be a tough call for sure, as the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM is one impressive lens. But don’t think too long as I know you will be very happy with this new Canon super-telephoto zoom in your pack.
The Canon 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 IS USM Mark II has been worth waiting for, now with unrivalled all-round telezoom versatility. It rates best in class for sharpness, AF performance, image stabilization, close focusing and build quality. Canon has done a very thorough job and it's still good value, too.
Many were referring to 2014 as the "Year of the Lens" and the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens joins a host of other 2014-anounced models (including the amazing Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens ).
This eagerly awaited telephoto zoom lens replaces the old 100-400mm lens in Canon's lineup of professional lenses. Its predecessor was popular due to its relative compact size, light weight and good value for money.
I think those who were waiting patiently for the Canon EF 100–400 mm f/4.5–5.6L IS II USM won’t be disappointed. Its predecessor was optically very good but the new lens is better in every single category.

noticeable vignetting at longer focal lengths on full frame,, a bit too many flares (despite a huge improvement when compared to the predecessor).
With the popularity of this lens' predecessor, Canon's new 100-400mm lens has a lot to live up to. As far as the performance of the lens is concerned, it has no problems living up to the reputation created by the old lens.

Good sharpness, Excellent build quality, Novel zoom ring resistance adjustment, Relatively lightweight, Reasonably low distortion, Weather and dust resistant, Low CA, Image stabilisation, Fast autofocus

More expensive than the old 100-400mm ever was, but differences may be worth it to some
This is a phenomenal lens!I've used the lens with my Canon 5DMIII and the Canon 7DMII. The lens is sharp and the auto focus locks in quickly and accurately. The image color and contrast are excellent.
This is my second 100-400 lens. I absolutely love the new version even more than the previous one I bought about about 15 years ago. This is my go-to lens for sports photography. I can use it sitting in the stands and I always get great shots.

I got this lens to be able to reach out further than the 70-200 lens that I already own. This Canon 100-400 F/4.5-5.6L IS II lens is great. I've used it to take pics of both moving (ex - fast flying birds) and still subjects with great success (great clarity, color, etc.).

Every single time I take this lens out to shoot I end up with a big grin on my face. Previously I have favored primes over zooms and especially over variable aperture zooms believing that I could not get the image quality I wanted with a zoom. In the past this may have been true. Not any more.
Lens was well worth the wait. Pictures are sharp and clear. Full frame and vary, vary fast focus. Works well with Canon's 1.4 converter.

Better tha expected, Pic's are crystal clear

Weight
As good as other reviewers have noted. It has done everything that I asked of it. Of course it's heavy, especially when extended out to 400mm, but note that the eclipse shot was handheld at 1/250 of a second (and I like the tiny spot of flare at the bottom left). The moon shot was done in L.A.
Also works quite well for nature photography,
