If you have a professional need for a beast of this nature, or a bank balance and a back that can stand the hammering, you will not be disappointed. At f/2.8, it is a fast lens for its length and works ideally indoors under lights at such events as fashion shoots as well as on the touchline or a...

The 400 f/2.8 IS has many striking features , it is hard to know where to start the review. The first striking feature hits you when you put the 400 f/2.8 IS in your shopping cart - the price . At the time of this review, the 400 f/2.8 IS Lens is the third-highest-priced Canon EF lens made.

This is the most expensive, but most impressive lens I own. Produces amazing sports/nature shots. I could gush and gurgle about it all day, but the bottom line is if you want the long range lens to have this is it. Add the 2x converter and you have an 800mm lens.

I read up on this lens before buying it and I would suggest doing that if you are thinking about picking one up. First it is a large piece of glass and it is heavy which I knew going into this purchase. It isn't the type of lens you want to pack around due to the weight.

I purchased this lens a few months ago. It is absolutely incredible for sports photography and wildlife/nature photography. Fast focus, incredible sharpness, rock-solid feel. I can't think of any negatives. It's a bit heavy, so be prepared to hold it securely or invest in a high-quality monopod.

This lens is the tool to get images that jump out at the viewer. As a sports lens I don't know if there is a better solution. It is a lot of weight to pack around, but after one or two games you get used to moving it around. A mono-pod is required for shooting any more than a few shots at a time.

I consider myself to be a very privileged amateur wildlife photographer simply by being able to own one of these amazing over the top lenses! Its heavy, no mistake, and needs a monopod - I use the Manfrotto 681B. Only own it if you feel able to throw yourself under it to protect your investment!

This lens is just AWESOME! Fast focusing speed very sharp and has super bokeh, It's heavy and expensive lens but image quality makes it worth every dollar spend.

Strength: Super sharp, fast AF Weakness: So it is a little heavy, what do you expect? Prior to purchasing this lens, I had used a number of 'L' lenses, mostly under 100 mm. My long lens was the EF 100-400 L, which was useful, but often disappointing.

This review is for the latest USM II version. It costs the Earth but should last as long. The depth of field at 400mm f2.8 is shallower than a Jeremy Clarkson quip. It weighs half as much as the equivalent Nikon. It is relatively small compared to other big fast lenses. Image quality is spectacular.

It's big and heavy. Okay, with all the negatives out of the way, you can look forward to using this lens. The point of a lens is to pick up and focus as much light as possible, and generally lenses of this power have apertures of 5-6. But this is an f2.8.

I haven't only used the 500L IS and the 600L IS but compared to _everything_ else in the line-up, the 400 2.8L IS (wide open) ties for Canon's #1 position for IQ alongside the 200 2L IS.
