The old adage that “You get what you pay for” definitely applies to the Expression Home XP-420. It’s somewhat slow compared to many other inkjets, and output quality, while fine for reports and such, suffers when printing photos.
-
+
Good features for the price, Uses separate ink tanks for each color, Large color LCD panel for a low-cost MFP, Slot for printing directly from an SD card
-
-
Output okay, but not really photo quality, On the slow side, No ADF or duplexing
![]() |
Meant primarily as a multifunction printer for home use, the modestly priced Epson Expression Home XP-420 Small-in-One offers lots of features and better-than-expected text quality.
-
+
Inexpensive. Compact. Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct. Prints from, and scans, to memory cards. High-quality text output in testing.
-
-
No duplexer, fax, or automatic document feeder. Lacks Ethernet.

On the other hand, if you’re not willing to make that kind of investment (and your print load is moderate and you don’t need that ADF), at its current $60 to $70 sale price, the Epson Expression Home XP-420 Small-in-One is a pretty good deal.
-
+
High-quality printed output, as well as scans and copies, Auto-duplexing print engine, Low initial purchase price
-
-
Very high cost per page, No USB flash-drive or PictBridge support, Lacks an ADF, Minimalist input and output trays

Don't be fooled by its small stature: the Epson Expression Home XP-420 all-in-one inkjet printer forges ahead of the competition with its compact footprint, cloud connectivity options and its ability to print high-quality snapshots directly from an Android phone or iPhone.
-
+
Supports a full suite of connectivity options including Wi-Fi and cloud printing services from Apple and Google, fast print speeds and excellent output quality.
-
-
Lacks Pictbridge-compatible USB port.
Great price and its limitations/shortcomings are not a big deal as I use the machine less than once a week or so. It scans well but so far I have not been able to make that part work wirelessly or through usb connection, have had to scan to sd card the transfer to my Macbook.

Cheap, Easy To Set Up, Easy To Use, Works Well Enough

Front Panel Menu 'clunky'
don´t understand why other people are having trouble setting it up , it is very simple

FEELS A BIT CHEAP - SHEET FEEDER NEEDS A LITTLE WORK
I am in the process of trying to install my new printer, and can not complete the installation. I find the instructions incomplete and unclear. I received a message that the print queue was not added, and I should see the printer guide; however, there is no printer guide other than the "quick" one,...
