Light, tough, good at absorbing vibration. This is an improvement over its predecessor, which had a center column that could not pivot, and which therefore prevented placing the camera very close to the ground.
I did a LOT of research on tripods & heads before I decided on the Gitzo Explorer even though it is soon to be discontinued. My second choice was to go with a China brand that was around $300 including the ball-head.
Twist lock legs and quick adjust ankle along with swinging center post make this very useful for any situation, relatively lightweight but still solid.
I've been using one of the predecessors to this Gitzo model for 11 or 12 years, but the leg locking mechanisms were beginning to deteriorate beyond repair so I wanted a replacement.
This is a very versatile tripod that can be put in all kinds of different positions. It's really well made with high quality materials. I'm really happy with it.
I use this for location work and travel. It provides great support and sets up fast. It's light enough and small enough it never becomes a problem when carried.

A good around tripod especially for nature photographers. The ability to position the centre column at any angle is the reason I chose this tripod. Particularly good for flower and fungi photography.

Compact, Easily Adjusted, Good Footing, Lightweight, Locks In Tight, Smooth Movement
Holds my D700 with 70-200 and teleconverter with no problems. Rock Solid. Makes me feels like I'm a better photographer because of the confindence this tripod gives me. Note: I don't extend the center column much so that makes it much more stable, but that being said I really like the off center...
This is a very flexible tripod, it is easy to use (locks are simple but very effective, when they are released the whole tripod is so free moving. Better for macro I think.
