The new Nikon AF-S Nikkor 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR lens definitely represents a serious investment, but it could be the only medium-super-telephoto lens that any professional sports or wildlife photographer needs.
Has Nikon’s first attempt at building a zoom lens with a built-in teleconverter been a success? AP’s Michael Topham finds out how the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR performs
That weaker performance can be noticed not only in photos of our testing charts or measurements but also in our sample shots. With the lens and the D3x set, where you deal with a full frame 24 Mpix sensor, the photos taken at 550 mm and examined in the 1:1 scale might seem to be still of good...

very solid, weather-protected casing,, sensational image quality in the frame centre and the 180-400 mm range,, excellent image quality on the edge of the APS-C/DX sensor in the 180–400 mm range,, very good image quality on the edge of full frame in the 180–400 mm range,, negligible longitudinal...

too weak performance after switching the teleconverter on,, very poor performance against bright light,, distinct vignetting on full frame detector.
This lens is unreal in how sharp, fast focusing, and versatile it is. All the reviews that I had read prior to purchasing, raved about the quality of the image. I totally agree that it is as sharp as a prime 400 mm, and starting at 180 mm rather than 200 mm is really a significant difference.
The 180-400mm works great where: 1) light is at at a premium, for example when you are shooting in the early morning or under a canopy of trees, and you need the extra stop 2) the subjects are large and/ or you are close enough to the subject that you do not need the extra reach of an 800mm lens...
Got my lens recently, and first thing I did a focus check with one of the micro focus adjustment software. I got +2, with and without the teleconverter. Used the lens on my new D5. Never had a lens so stable on the results. Went to take pics of birds in flight and nesting egrets.
Super sharp with or without the TC engaged. Used out in the desert with heavy winds & was great to not have to take off body to use TC.
Excellent image quality across all f-stops. Not too heavy; but a monopod at least is necessary. Looking forward to taking using it in the field.
Most sharpness zoom lens of nikon......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am a serious amateur who has been using Nikon lenses and cameras for 15 years. Before purchasing this lens, my most expensive and highest quality lens was the Nikon 400mmf2.8 E. Over the past 10 years I have made 15 trips to South Africa, mostly in Kruger National Park.
I've been a pro wildlife photographer for 30 years and have owned and used most all of the Nikon telephoto...300 f3.8, 400 f2.8, 500 f4 and 600 f4, along with the original Nikon 200-400. This lens far surpasses the old 200-400 (which never performed well at 400mm at any distance.
I'm very pleased with this lens. The TC flips in instantly without even taking your finger off the shutter button (unlike the Canon version of this lens), and this lens is indistinguishable in sharpness in comparison to the best of the big primes.
Nikon outdid themselves on this one!!! Super sharp!!!, Lightning quick focus. VR works great, internal teleconverter works great. worth every penny
