The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 20mm f/1.8G ED is an affordable lens for wide-angle lovers, but you'll want to stop it down for the best image quality.

  • +

Ultra-wide field of view. Wide aperture. 7.8-inch close focus.

  • -

Some edge softness unless stopped down. Modest barrel distortion. Lacks optical stabilization.

This compact ultra wide angle lens from Nikon costs around £680 and sports a bright f/1.8 maximum aperture, silent, internal focusing with full time manual focus override and Nikon's Nano Crystal optical coating, to improve contrast while suppressing ghosting and flare.

As optical design and construction improved, Nikon was able to introduce a more conventional Nikkor 20mm f/3.5 lens in 1967, and in 1989 the first Nikkor 20mm f/2.8 autofocus lens appeared.

The tested Nikkor can by only compared to the Sigma 20 mm f/1.8 EX DG Aspherical RF, a lens which could be called good over 10 years ago; currently our demands are noticeably higher and the performance of the Nikkor is the proof.

  • +

very good image quality in the frame centre,, good image quality on the edge of the APS-C/DX,, slight chromatic aberration,, properly corrected spherical aberration,, moderate distortion,, low coma level in the corners of the APS-C/DX sensor,, negligible astigmatism,, not very bothersome vignetting...

  • -

too much plastic and slacks in the casing,, a bit too weak image quality on the edge of full frame,, distinct coma in the full frame corners,, work against bright light could have been better,, significant vignetting on full frame.

This new lens from Nikon is a nice upgrade to the previous 20mm f/2.8D, which has a design that dates back to the early nineties. The fast f/1.8 aperture is great for low light shooting, and even though sharpness may not be of the same level as Nikon's top lenses at maximum aperture, it is still...

  • +

Very sharp when stopped down, Relatively compact and lightweight, Silent focusing, Low distortion for an ultra-wide angle lens, Good value, Nano-Crystal optical coatings

  • -

Falloff of illumination is quite severe at max aperture, Could be sharper at maximum aperture

I got this lens to shoot panorama night landscapes with a DX Nikon. Yes, I know it's 30mm on the tiny small miniature itty bitty teeny weeny size DX Nikon sensor, and it's not a ultra wide. With that out the way, I use this for night panoramas.

I sweated for a while before buying this lens, because I was worried 20mm would be too limiting. Too wide or too this or too that, but... it isn't. The 20mm 1.8 is now finding its way onto my D610 at almost every shoot, and the results are fantastic.

I shoot DX (7200) and was looking for a good quality, Wide Angle lens to serve as a walk-around and travel lens. I was also looking for great low light performance. And, weight was an important consideration, as I have a 17-55 2.8 which is an outstanding lens, but just too heavy for travel.

  • +

    Outstanding sharpness.Light weight.

  • -

None that I have uncovered thus far.

I purchased this lens to shoot Astrophotography and have been very pleased with it. Light, fast and sharp.

Great product. Due to some health issues I've only been able to do some test shots. Love the bokeh and narrow depth of field when I open up the aperture. Can't wait to get out and use it on some landscapes.

Excellent lens for the price but am baffled it is made in China and not Japan as my D750 made in Thailand. ????????
