I used to own the Nikon 18-200mm VR lens and it’s pretty good but very soft at anything less than f9 from 100mm upwards. I bought this lens, cheaply, as part of a kit when I upgraded my camera and I’ve done a few tests on it.

  • +

Wide zoom range, very good sharpness for a super zoom

  • -

No distance scale, chromatic aberrations are a little high at times

The Nikon 18-135mm was the only kit lens in Nikon's lineup that didn't feature VR image stabilization; the 18-140mm updates that, and adds a small bump in telephoto distance. The 18-140mm is not significantly better than the 18-135mm, other than including this technology, but I imagine from a...

All Nikon's 18-xx mm DX lenses are excellent, so pick yours based on size, weight and price. They all take great pictures; it's just how much you want to carry and long you want to zoom. It's like cutting a sausage to length.

Won't work well on FX digital or 35mm cameras because the lens can't cover the entire image. On 35mm cameras the sides and corners are black, and FX cameras will mask-down their finder to cover less than half their usual area.

This super-zoom lens for Nikon DX format DSLRs covers a huge 7.8x zoom range, equivalent to 27-210mm on a 35mm camera. It sports silent internal focusing and Vibration Reduction.

A consumer lens with a zoom ratio of almost 8:1 is never going to be as good in the optical department as primes or short-range professional zooms, and the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR certainly doesn't challenge that paradigm.

To be honest I wasn’t especially enthusiastic about the Nikkor 18-140 mm VR before the test. Its performance and its price made me change my mind, though. The lens complements nicely the line-up of other Nikon general-purpose lenses.

  • +

useful focal range,, very good resolution in the frame centre,, slight longitudinal chromatic aberration,, well-corrected spherical aberration,, low astigmatism,, silent, accurate and fast autofocus,, excellent stabilization.

  • -

significant lateral chromatic aberration at the longest focal length,, barrel distortion at wide angle and noticeable pincushion at the longer end of focal range,, lack of any accessories in the box.

This lens is a competent performer, producing decent sharpness throughout its zoom range, with low falloff and CA. However it appears to be priced quite highly, and probably doesn't perform well enough to justify being a choice as an upgrade from a similar lens, like Nikon's 18-135mm lens, that is...

We bought this with our D7200, it's been a great lens for everything. Hiking, portraits, horses and pets. I've been impressed that I can take a clear photo from a distance and a few seconds later zoom in on a wildflower. My favorite photos have been taken with this lens.

Got this for my D7200 for use for general travel photography. It is reasonably small (compared to the 24-120 f/4) and is quite sharp. For it's performance, I think that it's somewhat under priced (if there can be such a thing in modern lenses) as it's the best super zoom I've ever tried.

For non-critical work, snapshots, vacation photos, family get togethers, and when you are looking for only one lens to take with you on a trip to save weight and space, this lens is perfectly adequate. I've taken good pictures with it. It's not a bad lens. It's also not a very good lens either.

  • +

    Compact, Good all-around zoom range

  • -

CA is noticeable (bad IMO) at full zoom regardless of aperture setting

I bought this lens to go with a D7500 body. The lens is very well built, focuses smoothly, and the pictures from a color and sharpness POV are excellent . This lens is very balanced with the D7500 body-

You can get some great shots with this lens. I have been shooting on the Nikon D5300 for the last 4 years or so with this lens and about 3 years later after purchasing the kit, I bought a Nikon 35mm 1.8 prime.

I sought out this lens used for travel in place of my heavy 24-120 f4 and have been fully satisfied with it's performance. I use it mainly on my compact D5300. I've always owned only Nikon lenses and this one performs like a good Nikon lens.

  • +

zoom range, sharp at all focal lengths, correctable distortion

  • -

a bit heavy for my purposes
