The SB-700 may be more costly than its SB-600 predecessor, but it offers some significant interface upgrades and is a great all-around performer.

  • +

Improved control interface, Compatibility, Good continuous ability

  • -

Lower guide number, Higher MSRP, Little compatibility with film SLRs

I use the tiny SB-400 for fill-flash all the time in all of my DSLRs, from my D40 to my D3 . I don't need or want to carry anything bigger. I use an SB-600 in the very, very few occasions I need more power, or if I'm shooting a 35mm camera or any vintage.

Now just looking at the above comparison of specs, what we on the surface is that the Nikon SB-900 , unexpectedly, leads in many areas of performance and functionality. However, there are some important distinctions between these three flashes in the Nikon speedlight lineup.

This is a great flash. I had the SB600 but with the Nikon D810 I couldn't use all the functions but the SB700 is great and it works as a slave or master with my other flash and also off camera so I am very pleased with it.

SB-700 works well with my Nikon DSLRs. Flash unit appears well made. The flash comes with diffusion dome, and filters for incandescent and florescent lighting situations. Has a flash stand for remote, multi-flash situations. Also has diffusion lens and white bounce card built in.

Competent flash works well with all modern Nikon DSLRs. Fast recycle times. Comes with diffusion dome and filter accessories. Cheaper than more top of line Nikon flash units.

  • -

Not the biggest guide number in Nikon's family of DSLR flash units (but then again...do you really need that big a guide number...if you don't, save yourself some money and get the SB-700).

I am an experienced hobbyist. I have had many Nikon speedlights including three SB700s. One of them today made a loud pop and simply does not fire anymore. Its only three years old or so and not used all that often considering I have many others.

This is a perfect flash for outdoor portraiture - it's not 'nuclear,' like the SB800, but more powerful than the on-camera fill flash. Really, just perfect for outdoor portraiture.

I'm a casual photographer. But was having trouble getting good pictures of my active kids with my built in flash on a Nikon 7200. This flash has improved performance and picture quality dramatically. Very happy with this.

I use this flash in the field, and it has held up to some serious abuse. Controls are simple to figure out, and pretty basic. Works great with triggers. The main power control has an odd shape, and is extremely difficult to work with at night.

I've used a SB-800 for several years. The 700 is a simpliified improvement with new features on it. Love it so far and don't see that changing.

  • +

    Easier than the SB-800

I highly recommend this product for those who are serious photographers. Target did a great job of delivering too.

This was a great product. One set of new lithium batteries lasts me for one ENTIRE wedding weekend, from rehearsal to the end of the reception. It is a bit heavy, though. Other than that, it was fantastic!

  • +

Attach Securely, Even Light Source, Long Lasting, Powerful

I have used this flash on both a D5600 and D500. I have used this flash as a commander, "remote," and optical slave. It has been on on location and in the studio. If you are looking for a great, reliable all around flash for Nikon, this is it!
