The Onkyo TX-NR616 is a tremendous AV receiver value, with eight HDMI inputs and a very low street price, although Onkyo's step-down models may be an even better buy.

The Onkyo TX-NR616 is feature-packed, with eight HDMI inputs, dual HDMI outputs, built-in networking, and extensive streaming audio support, including Pandora, Spotify, Rhapsody, and Internet radio. Wi-Fi functionality can be added with a tiny, inexpensive USB adapter.

Some users have complained about reliability problems. The eighth HDMI input cannot be accessed via direct button, only by navigating menus. And the TX-NR616 lacks built-in AirPlay.
The Onkyo TX-NR616 would be better used as a $600 door stop. By dropping the HDMI signal every few seconds, it renders the TV broadcast completely unwatchable. I have seen many mentions of the same problem online, so I am assuming there is a significant design flaw.

Constantly drops HDMI signal
The Onkyo TX NR616 7.2 Channel 175 Watt Receiver is a quality product of the 2012 model year. I chose this 616 model instead of buying a new 646 because the older 616 provided me with Upscaling of Composite inputs to 1080p that the New models don't provide and then outputs them thru HDMI.
Bypassed receiver in order to get a proper 720p 120hz signal directly to the projector so that it could be detected as a device. But this requires two HDMI cables - one for audio, and one for video. That's not normal; neither is it acceptable.

Good sound quality. The speakers work. Initial setup went moderately well. Many ports and configuration options.

Main HDMI out does not work properly. 3D does not work. Based on the manual, I figure setting Monitor Out to Main and resolution to Through or Auto would do the trick. Also tried 720p. Also tried each option under Source Setup > Picture---Through, Auto, 720p---after adjusting to Through, etc.
