No promises, but I would like to write a full Samyang 85mm f/1.4 Lens review in the future. In the meantime, I think that you will find the standardized Samyang 85mm f/1.4 Lens results currently available to be helpful.
I used this lens for portrait shooting. The photos were super clear and sharp with great backgroundbokeh. I recorded some music recital and the video quality was really great. However, this lens is not for the sports video shooting because this lens is designed for manual mode.
Awesome lens! I use it on both a Nikon D90 and with an adapter on my Sony A6000 and it performs beautifully. Lovely bokeh, super sharp, and great contrast.
So far so good. Its a great value. My only concerns with the lens is that the focus ring is stiff, almost too stiff to focus quickly. Minimum focus distance is also quite far so there wont be any close ups unless your using an extension tube.
Sharp, good stiff focus, aperture is cam-controlled. I love this lens and chose it over the Pentax 77mm limited.I like that extra length. You really should not get such a great lens at this price.
I give it 5 stars because the Sale price was great and the lens is everything I hoped for. Check out the youtube videos testing the Samyang 85mm. This is my 2nd Samyang lens, #1 is the 12mm f2.8 which I bought with the Nikon D810 a few weeks back. Samyang is amazing period.
If you are ok with everything manual, don't hesitate. This is a great lens for the price. Only annoyance for me is that you won't get aperture data added to your pictures (I'm using with Sony a7ii) so in Lightroom aperture will be blank.
The mount is so snug there is virtually no radial or axial movement. The build quality to me is as good as any lens in my bag. The focus ring is smooth and precise again with no loose play. All exposure modes function great as does the focus indicator in my D750.
Big, beautiful lens. Advantages of the Pentax version include the "A" position, which means aperture changes can be automated. Even in full manual mode, which hairy-chested photographers like me use, I can simply spin the rear wheel on my K5 and change the aperture as needed.
I bought this lens to use for special portraits. Being a manual lens, it does take some practice to get a high success rate but when you nail the focus the photos are outstanding with great bokah. Once I master the lens like I feel I could, it will no doubt become my favorite portrait lens.
Sharp Sharp Sharp One down fall, its hard to focus through the view finder. Best practice is to stop the lens down to f2 or so, and if you still can't get focus, use the rear LCD and focus that way. Its a champ of a lens for a very affordable price.
