Active noise canceling headphones like Sony’s new WH-1000XM4 have quickly gone from a luxury to a must-have, as our homes evolve into remote offices and schoolrooms. At the same time, with most travel on hold, what we expect from a set of isolating headphones has changed dramatically.

Great noise cancelling, Great sound quality, Bluetooth multipoint is super convenient, Multiple Bluetooth codecs supported (SBC, AAC, LDAC), Bluetooth 5.0, Battery life is great, Comfortable and has hinges for folding, Auto-pauses when you take them off

Price is still expensive, Double-tap to pause didn't always work, Slightly less comfortable than the WH-1000XM3, Battery life is down from the previous version, Custom button controls either the Assistant OR noise cancelling
There isn’t a lot of new features on the WH-1000XM4, but that’s because it is already very good. For existing WH-1000XM3 owners, there is little reason to upgrade, more so when the design is almost identical, providing little freshness to the new purchase.

One of the best active noise-cancelling implementations on headphones in the market, New feature "Speak-to-Chat" works magically well, Ability to custom EQ and save in the headphones, Excellent smartphone app features

Relatively marginal improvements that might not matter to many, Overall plastic design lacks the premium outlook, No aptX audio codec, although SBC did not fare poorly, Ambient sound not as open sounding
Sony's terrific WH-1000XM4 headphones combine top-notch noise cancellation with audiophile-friendly sound quality.

Sony released its superb WH-1000XM3 noise-canceling headphones in 2018, and they still frequently top lists for the best noise-canceling headphones you can buy. But competitors haven’t been sitting idle: Bose’s Noise Canceling Headphones 700 are neck and neck with Sony for noise cancellation and...

USB-C port cannot be used for audio, No significant design changes after two years, Cold-weather improvements are unproven
The Sony WH-1000XM4 are impressive for commute and travel. While they aren't the most portable headphones, their hard carrying case can help protect them while you're on the go. They have an over 37-hour continuous battery life, and they can be comfortably worn for long listening sessions without a...

Bulky design.
Sony has been making noise-canceling headphones for years, and it's gotten pretty good at it. We had very few complaints about Sony's WH-1000XM3 headphones , so there wasn't much to fix in the latest iteration.

Audio qualityYou'd be hard-pressed to find Bluetooth headphones that sound better., Battery30 hours of use with ANC on is more than enough., Improved ANCSony's improved noise canceling is very effective., ControlsThe large touchpads work great, and the Quick Attention feature is handy.

CodecsNo AptX, which is desirable for some devices. LDAC doesn't work with certain features enabled., DesignNo design changes to speak of, still no water protection., Speak to chatToo apt to pause your music even on lower sensitivity settings.
There has been a battle waging for years between Bose and Sony for the title of best the wireless active-noise canceling cans. After more than a week of intensive time with the new Sony WH-1000XM4 I think it is clear we have an undisputed winner.

360 Reality Audio requires a compatible music service
The XM3s represented, at the time of their introduction, the pinnacle of noise-cancelling headphones, but the field has moved on, with Bose coming back into the fray with its al-new NC700s and Bowers & Wilkins with the PX7s.

+ Comfortable fit over long listening sessions and better weight distribution; improved finishing and padding make it an even more premium feeling product; improved sound quality over the XM3; improved noise cancelling offers the feeling of your own personal ‘bubble of solitude”; control app which...
I really like these headphones. The noise cancellation is much superior compared to the last headphone set which I've used. Only drawbacks I've found so far is: 1) it takes about 5 seconds whenever accepting a phone call for headphones to work properly for phone conversations, 2) the ear pads are...

1) Noise cancellation is probably the best I've seen out of all other over the ear headphones I tried on.2) Sound quality is excellent for communications and treble type music.3) Application can be used to provide more bass to your music but not to magnitude of Bose or Beats.

1) It takes about 5 seconds whenever accepting a phone call for headphones to work properly for phone conversations due to having to manually adjust phone's audio connection to headphone after accepting phone calls.
I upgraded from wired Bose QC25 headphones. Thus far I have found the microphones to be not quite as good as Bose, but the audio quality is exceptional. My main issue right now is that the dual bluetooth is causing problems. For example, I am often on a video conference and then I get a phone call.
Please update the app to allow user adjustment per second for focus on voice to turn off. 15 seconds is way too long. Love these. Bought xm3's 6 months ago and gave them to my dad boy expecting to keep the xm4's assuming that they'd be pretty much the exact same... Not at all. Way better.
When paired to my computer and iphone, and when a call comes in, I double tap to answer, and then the headset answers the call, but then disconnects the computer. So right when the caller is saying hello, they are pushed into the background and I have to listen to "Device 2 disconnected" then ask...
This is the 3rd headphones I have, first I got is the Beats studio wireless and the next one is the Beats solo3, the musicality is so far the same or should I say better than Beats, bass and sharpness of sound is good, noise cancelling is very outstanding and ambient sound with adaptive sound is...
great headphone, I hope I can get it earlier.I only use it at home.noise canceling is great. very comfortable. good battery life. Can connect to two devices.motion detection sometimes gets confused, e.g. you are doing dishes, it may think you are walking and stop the noise canceling.
These headphones are worth it. I love that when I turn them on, the noise cancellation turns on and it's really cool. Setting up my settings on the Sony app is really easy. The headphones are comfortable as well and I can wear them for long periods of time without my ears hurting.
I have owned three Sony ANC headphones to date. I recently traded in the amazing XM3 series for the new XM4s. What's new, sharper ANC at higher frequencies, more comfortable ear covers, BT5.0 for longer range and quicker device switching, and wear detection sensors to pause music if you take the...

Thinner headband less comfortable for reduced longevity in wear sessionsPriceNot waterproof/resistantShort USB-C cable included
Sound is clear and comfortable. Noise canceling is great and the ability to recognize you are walking and allowing ambient sound to pass through is a great feature. Product would be excellent if I could get the touch controls to be responsive, often resort to one device controls because the touch...
These headphones could be absolutely amazing. They are very comfy and the sound quality is very good and they are almost every way better than the previous XM3:s. BUT! when connecting these to my LG TV with Bluetooth, how can there be latency when XM3:s didn't have any latency problems, especially...
