I thought that probably the best way to "test" out the H4n Handy Recorder is to use it for a lot of different applications and find out how it handles and performs. The overall construction is quite sturdy and the button placement on both sides is quite well thought out.

This may be more digital recorder than you need for simple vocal content, given there’s so many more features here than any of the devices on our list. The H4n comes with a pair of X/Y stereo condenser mics designed to be equidistant from your source of sound.
The H4 remains one of the most flexible of the current crop of portable 24‑bit recorders, but Zoom have found plenty of room for improvement — and, more importantly, they've used it.
If you have the space for this it is perfect. It is a bit bulky for the size of the product but the quality is top rate. I carry the H4nPro in my camera case when flying but for local travels and use it never leaves its case.
I purchased this for recording rehearsals and maybe studio takes. Then I realized that as a interface the Zoom H4n communicates perfectly with my Logic Pro X in my mac. Man, I can record at 48 Khz, I don't need to pay a for a studio to record amplified instruments and vocals for my band!.
I recently finished the audio engineering course at Musicians Institute and am attending the post-production extension course - my new 'toy' will come in very handy!

Nice, compact size. Built in mics are great! Everything I could want in a mobile recording device. I haven't put it down since I got it.

No cons yet. I might look around for a better wind screen but otherwise this is a solid unit.
Amazing piece of equipment. It picks up everything in the room, but using the appropriate audio editor, you can clean up the recording and end up with excellent quality audio. Learning all the operations takes some time. Using the instructions manual, which is well written, is a must.
Very well built and light case... not enough room for accessories inside unfortunately. Plenty of padding though.
Very handy and reliable - wonderful sound and great price! I can compare it to my old Nagra IV and its sound is just as brilliant and well defined. a great buy!
Extremely useful recording tool. Sound quality is good from integrated mics. My only warning is that use is not exactly intuitive. It has taken me several hours with the manual and online to learn the nuances of the Zoom H4N, and I still don't feel that I'm using it optimally.
This case is overkill; it has so much padding you'd have to throw it out a window to damage the contents. There is space for your Zoom, handle, extra card, spare batteries, windscreen etc. The latch is very secure and the ability to padlock the case is a nice feature.
I bought this to serve two purposes; to record interviews, and to act as an on-camera mic on my DSLR video rig (at least until I pick up a shotgun mic to replace it). I'm still learning the ropes, but so far audio comes out clean and spot on; the capture is excellent.
So far I love, love, love this recorder. I have no prior experience, and I'm still learning how to use it, but what I've done so far has been helpful. I plan on reading the manual cover to cover and really use this to its full potential.
