The Canon RF 16mm f2.8 is that rarest of things: an exotic lens at an accessible price. The ultra-wide coverage delivers photos and videos packed with drama, but from a compact, light and affordable lens that won’t break the bank or your back.
There’s a time and a place for big, heavy lenses, but sometimes you need something small and light. With a 16mm focal length, the Canon RF 16mm F2.8 STM gives an ultra-wide view that can be ideal for capturing impactful landscapes or the night sky and at just 165g in weight, you won’t mind slipping...

Very compact and light

Single ring for control or manual focusing
While the RF 16mm f/2.8 lens has extreme barrel distortion, strong lateral CA, and a budget AF system, the image quality this lens produces is consistently quite good. Factor in the ultra-low size, weight, and price, and this lens becomes a great deal.
The Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM is a lens with many facets. It comes down to where you come from and what you want. For instance, if you own an EOS R3 or R6, it's a decent ultra-wide prime lens - because, at 20 megapixels, even a Coke bottle is sharp enough. Well, almost.
A small, light, bright and exceedingly sharp lens with a wealth of applications, for an exceedingly appealing price. The RF 16mm f/2.8 STM will be a welcome addition to the bags of wedding, landscape, astro and street photographers – and probably more beside.

Awkward barrel controls, Chromatic aberration in corners, Vignettes at larger apertures
The new 16mm lens for full frame Canon R cameras is small, lightweight and low cost. So where are the compromises, asks Damien Demolder

Small, Lightweight, Low cost

Horrific distortion, Very heavy vignetting, Severe chromatic aberration
The Canon RF 16mm F2.8 STM opens up wide-angle imaging to more photographers thanks to its $300 price, and delivers more than you'd expect from a low-cost lens.

Heavy optical corrections influence angle of view, Skips dust, splash, and fluorine protection, Audible focus action, Lens hood not included
Compact, lightweight and affordably-priced, the RF 16mm f/2.8 STM lens would be a worthwhile investment for anyone who needs an ultra-wide prime lens that is compact and easy to carry.
The picture needs to be digitally corrected with this lens. It is a very small and light wide angle lens though. Satisfied with the purchase.
Using this on a Canon EOS R7 for talking head videos and this lens is fantastic. Overall would recommend it.
Does this Lens fit to an EOS Rebel T7 just curious before I purchase for a good up close video/blogging etc Lens
When I could only afford one lens, this is what I got! It's great, light for a ronin, and can cover many uses! I highly recommend it.
If you’re traveling, this will be a good lens bringing than your Red Rings.
Good product but it is pity that i can’t connect to my camera 90D
Very helpful, wide range of accessories first class
In a nutshell, this lens is excellent for Astrophotography, architecture, landscape and interiors. I also found this lens to be very good for macro because you can get in really close to your subject.
I bought this lens to go a bit wider than my RF 24-105 L mm lens, it's a dinky little lens that delivers good quality for the price, the only downside is it loses a tiny bit of quality at the edges and there is a touch of chromatic aberration at the edges nothing that can't be addressed in Canon...
I enjoy using this on a R6 and always pleased with the images. Also quite a useful general wide angle field of view on the R7. Focussing a little noisy compared to USM motors. Main gripe is the lack of supplied lens hood and pouch, come on Canon it is t cheap and every other manufacturer seems to...
