The Canon RF 35mm f1.8 IS Macro STM is a mild wide-angle prime lens for the EOS R full-frame mirrorless system, and remains the smallest, lightest and more affordable model in the native catalogue to date.
The perfect partner for Canon EOS R or RP mirrorless cameras, this lens is wonderfully compact yet fabulously v...
What does this mean ?
Many acquire a mirrorless camera for smaller size and lighter weight while retaining great image quality and the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS STM Macro Lens follows through with that spirit.
Although not the perfect choice for the EOS RP, the RF 35mm f/1.8 is the only RF-mount lens so far that fits comfortably on the lighter, more compact camera body. It’s also the most affordable of the RF lenses on offer so far.
A 35mm 0.5x macro lens may be an odd choice for one of the RF line’s first few lenses, but it’s nice to have a compact alternative to the other optics released so far. It’s a shame it’s not a true macro lens, but if you think of it more as a wide-aperture, wide-angle with the advantage of...

Compact and well balanced on EOS R, Great build quality, Lens control ring is a useful inclusion, Fast AF system, Great sharpness at moderate apertures, Very good corner sharpness wide open

Not a true 1:1 macro lens, Moderate vignetting at widest apertures, A little curvilinear distortion, No focus limit switch, AF motor somewhat noisy during stills
The Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS Macro STM is the dark horse of the new Canon full-frame mirrorless system. By far the cheapest, lightest and most compact RF lens, it's also arguably the most versatile too, doubling up as both a great 35mm prime and a 1:2 magnification macro lens.
Very sharp. Autofocus works great for my commercials when I’m short crewed or gimbaled. Light weight and the macro is amazing. IS makes gimbal unnecessary in some circumstances. Great value. Every RF owner should have this little jewel.
Im using a 24-105rf and now this rf35 f/1.8 on my EOS R. This lens has lovely Bokeh, nice build and super fast af plus solid stabilization. No weather resistance that I can see but at this price point this is what we get. Wide open at f1.8 this lens matches the 30 megapixels very well.
The lens is a good value all around lens. It is small and light weight... great to pack away and travel. The optics are sharp and accurate. Very pleased to have made this purchase.

Not a f/1.4
Lens has been great for everyday street photography
This lens is as sharp or shaper than my two "L" lenses. 24-105 f4 and the 70-200 f4. Very impressive. It's small, light and sharp. maybe I just got a good one, but I'm happy and frankly surprised by its' performance, My only complaint is the lack of weather sealing.
When the new EOSR came out, I was very much hoping that at least one of the early lenses would be a macro lens, since I get a great amount of enjoyment from macro photography. I was thrilled when the 35mm f/1.8 IS Macro STM Lens was announced. Getting it in the hand, it is so small!
For what you’re paying for this 35mm is quite good and very fun. The fact it also has image stabilization and a half macro feature allowing you to take photos incredibly close to your subject also make this lens so much fun.
Im a huge fan of good affordable primes due to the value they deliver, and judging by the amount of time this one has spent on my R since I bought it, I have to say its my current favorite. It is just so, so versatile, and the image quality is excellent.
I wanted to love this lens based on the reviews but found it had a really hard time focusing on my subject in low light, whereas my 24-70 f2.8 @ 35mm caught the focus on the same subject matter immediately.
A moderately priced lens for the EOS R system, the RF 35mm f/1.8 IS Macro STM is an all-arounder that will spend a lot of time on the EOS R camera. It is sharp edge-to-edge even wide-open and the color rendering is Canon at its best.
