As shared, the Canon RF 800mm F5.6 L IS USM Lens is a niche lens, optimal for those requiring the 800mm focal length more than occasionally or needing a focal length longer than 800mm. If the niche targeted by this lens is important to you, there is no better option for it.
Given that there are so few choices available in this category of super telephoto lenses in the Canon mount, the decision is almost made for you if you need to produce images at distance.
There is nothing like the arrival of a new Canon Super Telephoto Lens to bring the excitement of Christmas to any time of the year. And the hit on the credit card from this lens is considerably larger than the hit from most households' Christmas expenditures.
A fast 800mm prime telephoto lens that will provide high performance for sports and wildlife photographers.Canon’s EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM lens is a ‘big gun’ in many ways. Weighing 4.5 kilograms and almost half a metre long with its lens hood attached, it’s a challenge to shoot with.
There aren't too many reviews for this (and not any recently) -- I guess there just aren't that many around. Anyhow, my wife gave this to me as a present last year. I really didn't think I had a need for it, but it sure is cool.
Really glad to have bought this lens. When I got it out of the box and tried it out, autofocus was a little off. Manually focusing produced a picture so sharp it was like a long range microscope - amazing resolution.
It's an excellent lens in every regard. Compared to the 200 f2L IS (which I have) it falls a bit short in the CA performance. But if you've used the 200L IS this is something you'll fuss about with every lens you use and unfortunately the 800L IS isn't immune to it.

Nitpicking a bit but CA
A great performing lens when it comes to Wildlife and news photojournalism. Of course you can use this lens for sports as well. But it might be a bit tight standing at the field, because you might be too close.
I've been shooting this lens for approximately 18 months now. It's terrific. But. There is a learning curve with this. You don't just mount up a body, slap it on a gimbal and start taking tack sharp photos. Shooting at 800 takes some getting used to. Be that as it may, this is a great lens.
The Canon 800mm that I recently purchased is everything that I hoped it to be, which is super sharp and a breeze to use with my Wimberley Gimbal head. Quality construction along with Canon's optimum glass makes this lens stand above any other lens that I have used!
I absolutely love this lens, I purchased a reverse mount adapter for this last week and have been using it for some macro photography. I've also just recently discovered a new microscopic particle way beyond the atom and have received nomination for the Nobel Prize. Well done as always Canon.
Resolution has always been my highest priority and this lens certainly is the best. The auto-focus features are superb. After using the 600mm f/4 L lens for years trading it in for the 800 was the best trade I've ever made.

wish it had a larger aperture
Awesome lens used mainly for Aviation Art Photography. Hand-holdable for extended period of time. Great stabilizer, down to 1/320 while following the moving object! Needs to be coupled with a right camera body.
Stupid me! I didn't have a tripod worthy of this new lens so that was my next purchase. It is too heavy for hand held and just like any telephoto lens you will have to experiment to find the "sweet spot" settings that work best with your camera.
