All of Gitzo's 3-Series Carbon Fiber tripods are great, including the Gitzo GT3530LS Carbon Fiber Tripod I have been using for a long time. I picked up the Gitzo GT3541LS 6x Carbon Fiber Tripod specifically for its more compact retracted size.
I'm going to use this tripod for landscape and long exposure photography. The easy to loosen legs are wonderful and the tripod is solid and light concidering how tall it is.
5 star tripod that should also include spiked feet that I had to buy separate. I own 3 other Gitzo tripods, the Series 5 carbon tripod 6-section, weekender and now the mountaineer to replace a heavier aluminum similar size that needed to be replaced.
This tripod was purchased for use with the Mamiya 645DF+ camera body, DSLR camera bodies and Kessler Cine Slider. The build quality is excellent. The weight is minimal and feels very solid given how light it is.
I use this tripod with a gimbal head, Tamron 150 - 600 mm lens and Canon Mark IIV body. It works well, and is nice and stable. However, the instructions with the tripod could be better. The instuctions have only a little written description and picture diagrams.
Like other reviewers here, I purchased this tripod to go with my RRS BH-55 full-sized ball head. I chose this model over a few of the others with it's size and capabilities, simply because I liked the newer clip design for spreading the legs over the old.
I had always wondered why people would spend so much on a tripod. After buying several travel type carbon models from the likes of Vanguard and MeFoto. Both a little lightweight for my gear. Useable in perfectly still conditions though. The Gitzo is absolutely wonderful to use.

Sticky leg operation
Pros- Light weightCons- Cheap plastic parts inside (easily break), lost all the feet in two months, piece was missing from leg so leg comes off when opening (they say missing pieces are not covered), Both lower grips fell off, Leg cracked, Extender piece is too flimsy not usuably for any large...
Well made, sturdy, nice to work with. The leg lock are quick and solid. I love using this tripod.
Over all a quite good tripod. Some things are not good in my estimation.1) for this expense, the tripod should have a bubble level2) for this expense, the tripod should have at least one foam padded leg3) I have repeatedly had the system that attaches the center post lock up so that I cannot...
I had to purchase new rubber locking leg grips as one just came apart. I've used this tripod for...I bet one week since I purchased it -ok 2 weeks actually (2 one week events) and it came apart. AND the legs all stick as I try & slide them. Ridiculous!
