Joby GorillaPod Rig Upgrade

The Gorillapod really is a handy tool to have in your photographic bag. In some cases, it won’t actually replace a full size tripod, but as a handy, light and portable alternative, it really does the job. It’s not only for night photos either.

Having spent time with the Gorillapod I found it really hard to find any faults with the mount. My only complaint was not being able to use the mount with my DSLR, but even that was not an issue because Joby does sell a mount specifically for the heavier SLR’s.

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been using the Gorillapod Original to take macro pictures used on my food blog. Since my compact digital camera doesn’t have image stabilization, the Gorillapod has been fantastic at steadying the picture. It’s also great for taking group shots during a hike.

I bought this in hopes of not carrying my full size tripod around everywhere while on holiday. I hoped it would hold a D750 with a 50mm lens. It did with the legs upright but when extended out to the sides, to get a lower vantage point, the legs would not hold the weight.

I love the ability to film from virtually anywhere, but the plastic is weak and in less than 4 months, mine has developed cracks with normal useage. Returning it for a new one.

A fantastic tripod for those photographers that would like to get rid of the common photography problems such as motion blur or lack of focus.

I bought this because my smaller one was too small for my camcorder and drooped despite that Gorillapods weight rating. This one was perfect for my PanasonicHC-X920 and light enough to go anywhere. I deducted a star because the next smaller tripod should have worked. I love the level, though!

I've taken this tripod on more than 100 day hikes and/or backpacking trips over a period of 3+ years without issue, primarily with Canon Power-shot series of cameras (S90/100). Light & compact. Easy to use, whether shooting vertical or horizontal.

The Joby Gorillapod is a very innovative and useful camera accessory that enables composing what would otherwise be an impossible shot.

  Can be used in stange places to get awesome shots. Pretty straight forward. Just add imagination.

  It is not a gorilla nor is it as strong as one. It wasn't made by gorillas either. I accept the fact that I may never understand the name.
