This 2.9x telephoto zoom lens covers the popular 70-200mm range on a 35mm camera and provides a focal length roughly equivalent to a 107-307mm range when used with Pentax APS-C DSLRs.
As you might expect, this lens is a highly competent, highly specified lens, with all the bells and whistles you'd expect from a high end manufacturer's own lens. Features like weather sealing, metal build, silent focusing and exotic optical coatings all add to the appeal of this optic and there is...
Have had this lens three weeks & have been out with it several times already with it mounted to my K-1. It has exceeded my expectations. My only comparison is to my Nikon 80-200 f/2.8D (non-AF-S)mounted on my D750. Not exactly apples to apples, but close I think. The Pentax combo is sharper I think.
This is a great lens. The focusing is fast and spot-on,. outstanding image quality ,I have not had it very long and still playing around with it . Practice photo below taken at the beach in very low light plus some Great Egrets close enough to snap a bird photo...
This lens fully lives up to its reputation - solid and heavy, but a pleasure to handle delivering crisp, sharp, rich colored images across the aperture range. I am delighted with it, taking it's place alongside my 150-450 as a duo of heavyweight treasures covering all my telephoto needs.
Pentax cameras are somewhat infamous for slow or inconsistent focusing. However, my K-1 paired with this lens proves all the naysayers wrong. This lens is not only fast at focusing but also the sharpest lens that I have ever owned.
I am an outdoorsman living on a farm in NE Ohio. I need camera gear that stands up to the elements. Snow, rain, stormy weather, and sudden drenching dew while bouncing around in an aluminum walleye boat at night is regular photography for me.
My favourite lens at the moment. Pros: Stunning image quality. 77mm filter thread means moving up from Pentax DA* APS-C glass isn't as painful as it could be Incredibly sharp from wide open. So sharp that I have to lower the clarity in Photoshop/Lightroom for portraits.
The first thing you will say when you open the box is "Wow". This is large, heavy and solid. The next thing you will see, is how incredible the image quality is. Another "Wow". I was a little put off by the price until I seen what this is capable of.
Normally I don't write reviews but I think it is necessary to let people think about it before spending so much money for this lens. It is not real 200mm at the longest end but something like 135mm. I have compared it with Pentax DA* 200mm 2.8, Pentax 80-320mm 4.5-5.6 and Nikon 70-200mm f4.
This big heavy beast is astonishingly sharp at all focal lengths, even wide open. I have used it for animals and outdoor sport, where perhaps it isn't really long enough on the K1, but I can crop heavily and still get far sharper and more compelling images than with the DA 55-300 at 300mm.
This is the return of the legendary FA* line, rewritten for the k1. A true pro - level lens, it is a beast! I am still waiting for my k1 but initial shots on my k5iis are remarkable in terms of sharpness, color rendering and contrast. This is a must - have for every pro and passionate photographer!
