This scope is used for astronomy, nature, and shooting. It is my 4th spotting scope over about a 25 year period and it is my favorite. Previously, I had 2 high quality 60mms and one 77mm, all with regular glass. This one provides the most crisp and clear focus across the entire field.
We purchased this scope for birding, and from our initial use, this is an impressive piece of equipment for identifying birds in their natural habitat. With the Pentax SMC 8-24 mm zoom eyepiece (purchased with the scope), we are able to observe and identify raptors at over 600 yards.
I bought this scope for long distance target shooting. I have not had time to get to the range yet however, I can see clearly the window unit A/C at the top of an elevator shaft 8 stories up and 12 blocks away beautifully on a hot day.
The optics are of course superb but the very clever carry case is what makes this product stand out! Very convenient and well placed zippers and velcro closures make take down, set-up and transport from the shooting range to car to storage a joy without fear of damage to the scope.
I use this for birding. It is my first spotting scope, so I have no basis for comparison (hence the 4, rather than 5 stars). I expect some of the German glass is better, but I'm not sure the value would be there, at least for me. I bought the 10mm and 20mm Pentax eyepieces. Both are very good.
I was looking for a quality spotting scope for use at gun range. I found it. The price was the best I found anywhere, can't be beat for the price.
Exceptional glass, the Pentax would be very hard to top, regardless of cost.
This scope is hands down for the money the best you can buy. Will be using it at the rifle range and for hunting. Never looked through a more crystal clear lens such as this. WOW!
I bought another less expensive scope and regretted it from day one. The eye relief was not great and eye fatigue set in on long days (across the course matches and longer). This scope is on the firing line with ones costing 2-3 times as much.
Use for bird watching from tripod at home. Is everything it promises to be. Only minor thing is the focus wheel - it could be a little bigger or devided into at rough and fine wheel. Overall, I think it is a great value for money.
