The Tiffen Variable ND is a chunky filter that's clearly very well built. It's optically very good, so you can rely on sharp detail and accurate colours, but due to the way polarisers work you cannot avoid the cross pattern that starts to affect the filter at the higher ND settings.

Very good filter, I use variable nds for video as it's faster and easier to expose for your shot on the fly. Especially when using a gimbal. Try to avoid the max of the filter or going past it as you will get vignetting.
I don't know why they make these VND filters when the they have huge problems in the upper 1/3 of the darkest densities. All these filters are like this. It's great to not have to carry a bunch of filters, but I still carry a 10 stop filter on really bright days.
Filter works fine. However I am disappointed with Tiffen for not sending the rebate they promised. I've waited 14 weeks so far and they said they would send it in 12.

I bought it for use on a vacation to photograph waterfalls. Worked great.I was hoping to have an opportunity to photograph lightning storms that pass through this area often but alas, there were now lightning storms this trip.
It's just ok. I need to play with it some more but the picture quality seems to degrade. It also came with a $20 rebate from Tiffen. Met all the requirements, this was over 3 months ago, haven't heard anything from them.
Great product for dslr photo and video
When I first tried twisting it, it was extremely stiff, but then I figured that inner metal ring covering the outer filter must be screwed in too tight. So I grabbed a thin metal ruler and carefully loosened the ring.
When doing long exposure images during sunset this failed me. FOr really darkening down its okay. But in between you do get the x or vignetting. Might stick to graduated filters for now.
I was aiming to avoid using HSS on my flashes during bright sunny days and this ND filter does exactly that. Thanks to the tip from Anthony Scott, this filter extends battery life thus the amount of flashes during sunny days.
